DuckDuckGo is best known for its privacy-focused search engine and promises not to track what it does. The company also offers a number of other privacy-centric products, including web browsers and private email addresses. And like most tech companies, it's also jumping on the AI bandwagon — but in a way that claims not to compromise your privacy.

DuckDuckGo does not develop its own privacy-centric AI. Instead, it offers access to other companies' chatbots, including OpenAI's GPT3.5, Claude3Haiku, open source Meta Llama3, and Mixtral8X7B. 

The difference compared to using these chatbots elsewhere is that DuckDuckGo promises to keep your interactions anonymous by default, that is, the chat is kept private and anonymized by duckduckgo itself.

DuckDuckGo basically acts as an intermediary and sends what you enter to the chatbot in question. This means that the bot will only capture the IP address of duckduckgo and not your own IP address. We will also delete all metadata that may contain other personal information before these chat requests are sent.

CHATS ARE NOT STORED PERMANENTLY, BUT DUCKDUCKGO NOTES THAT SOME AI PROVIDERS "MAY STORE CHATS TEMPORARILY." The contract with the provider means that the chat will be deleted within 30 days, and also that the content will not be available for training the AI model. In addition, the fact that DuckDuckGo is acting as the man in the middle of it means that these conversations can't be traced back to you.

DuckDuckGo AI is free to use, but there is a 1-day limit on what you can do. There are no paid options to increase these limits or access more advanced models, but the company acknowledges that it could be something it will offer in the future. It also promised that more chat models would be added to the system, which could include models hosted by DuckDuckGo or its users.
