A new 6-part documentary series created by the BBC, "On Thin Ice: Putin v Greenpeace," tells a fascinating story of how a Greenpeace ship sailed towards a Russian oil rig that was trying to extract the world's first offshore Arctic oil.

Hoping to film the protest, a group of activists came face-to-face with the Russian security Service, and as Vladimir Putin bent his muscles against the West, has been arrested on copyright infringement and terrorism charges.

Each 29-minute episode is based on a wealth of unseen footage, movie reconstructions and interviews with people on board. We hear from the protesters and Russians who were imprisoned near the event.

Sir Paul McCartney has helped secure the release of 30 protesters facing 15 years in prison for copyright infringement, but has not appeared in a new film. There were (erroneous) reports that it was down to fear of security; in fact, Sir Paul was just a busy tour.

"On Thin Ice: Putin v Greenpeaceピ Episode 2 (29 min) As activists continue to climb the rigs, things start to get ugly when 2 climbers are caught by the Russian coast Guard. Armed officers with Balaclavas and Kalashnikovs begin to board the ship - it may be a counter-terrorism unit.

Activists try to continue shooting, but the Russian security forces manage to take over the ship. The shot will be fired.

"On Thin Ice: Putin v Greenpeaceピ Episode 3 (29 min) 2013/9. The Arctic sunrise was boarded, activists were gunned down, and the FSB seized control of the ship.

The captured activists expect 48 hours of detention, but after being taken to a detention center in Murmansk, they have been charged with copyright infringement and sentenced to up to 15 years.

"On Thin Ice: Putin v Greenpeaceピ Episode 4 (29 min) The arrested activist arrived at Murmansk Prison and was sentenced to two months of pretrial detention. "On Thin Ice: Putin v Greenpeaceピ Episode 5 (29 min) The team needs to keep the protesters in the news. Meanwhile, Greenpeace appeals that the Arctic 30 will be released on bail - their best hope of getting them.

"On Thin Ice: Putin v Greenpeaceピ Episode 6 (29 min) Media campaigns are spread all over the world, but they are not reported in Russia. They managed to convince Sir Paul McCartney to write to Putin a letter calling for the release of the Arctic 30. Finally, they get extensive coverage of the Arctic 30 stories across Russia.

The accusations of copyright infringement against Arctic 30 will be replaced by hooliganism, giving Greenpeace the opportunity to appeal bail again. After the judge retires in court to receive the call, the activist is given bail.

As the 2014 Sochi Olympics approached, Putin declared a pardon, released 25,000 people, including Pussy Riot, from prison and dropped 30 charges in the Arctic so they could eventually return home. But things go downhill rapidly for Russia.
