Half of the Tour de France favourites were testing their feet at the Critérium du Dauphiné the previous week, while the other half were bending their legs at the Tour de Switzerland. With Tadej Pogañar in the starting seat when he is preparing at altitude and Jonas Vingegaard as he continues to recover from injury, the role of favourite is on the shoulders of 2023 winner Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), who has had a quiet season, but he has been in the Swiss Alps last year. He will be keen to reaffirm his place at the top table of cycling, repeating his landmark victory at the Rio Olympics.

The three-man attack of Tom Pidcock, Egan Bernal and Jonathan Narvaez of the Ineos Grenadiers launched a serious attempt to become the winner of the stage race in particular. Groupama-FDJ is headed by young sensation Renee Martinez and Israel Premiattech by the winner of this year's Fleche Wallonne, Stephen Williams

among those here to hunt the stage and not chase the overall victory, Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny), Pello (Lotto Dstny), and more. Look for things like Bilbao (Bahrain - Victory), local hero Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates).

The first blood went to Yves Lampard (Soudal Quick-Step), who blasted the short 4.8 km TT course and posted the fastest time 3 seconds ahead of Swiss rider Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-EasyPost). Lampard has proven himself to be a specialist in this field, as he also won the opening stage of the 2022 Tour de France on a similar course.

Today he should be able to defend the race lead as Stage 2 from Vaduz to Regensdorf is expected to end in a bunch sprint.

The 2024 Tour de Switzerland will begin with a prologue of 4.8 km in the town of Vaduz to implement GC orders from day one. After this short yet intense start, the next day sees riders face a craggy 177km journey from Vaduz to Regensdorf.

A sprinter who missed Stage 2 could get another chance in Stage 3 at the finish at Leuchelikon, but with multiple short steep rises in the last kilometer, they could fail by a late break.

Stage 4 is where the real action begins with the finishing of the race at the top of the world-famous Gotthard Pass. With an uphill climb of almost 30 kilometers, your favorite team needs to make sure the leader is properly positioned to mark at the summit.

Stage Five from Ambri to Cali features a second summit finish in two days with even more test finishes than the previous day, and then Stage Six sees the first HC climb of the race. The 151km from Locarno to Bratten is dominated by the huge Nufenen Pass, but coming 60km from the end could be decisive.

Yet more mountains and yet another summit finish are on the cards of Stage Seven around Villar Sur Oron as the race crosses the same two mountains twice in a huge loop in and out of town.

The final stage, such as the first, is a time trial. This time everyone hoping to get a long test time of 15.7 km will have the last chance.
