Typically, Apple's WWDC has reasonable certainty about what it will show off at its annual developer conference. Apple usually uses this annual gathering as an opportunity to showcase the assembled app makers, and the rest of the world.We're planning the rest of the year with iphone, Mac, iPad and Apple Watch software. And indeed, it will certainly happen at WWDC2024 this year.

However, describing what is likely to be seen when WWDC is in progress on Monday (6/10) as just a "software preview" is not the case with Apple's likely CEO Tim Cook. In addition to IOS18, we are expected to hear about updates to watchOS11, macOS15, and both tvOS and visionOS during WWDC. Perhaps the WWDC keynote will fill in a lot of details about what exactly improved Siri can do, but as we head to Apple's developer conference, Gurman writes that "these features are unlikely to arrive until next year," which will almost certainly cover third-party app support and more complex Siri requests. It's a good idea. But does that also mean that more sophisticated Siri tasks will not be available immediately when the full version of ios 18 launches in the fall? Here, we expect APPLE to clarify the timeline of the new Siri feature in the WWDC keynote, as it certainly has done with less substantial improvements than a full reboot of its virtual assistant. I have an iPhone12, and based on rumors of iOS18 device compatibility, I almost certainly got iOS18public beta on my phone when it arrived the following week of WWDC, but the question remains how much iOS18 features will be available on my phone and other older devices.

We've heard that only the iphone15Pro, iPhone15Pro Max, and iPhone16 models arriving in the fall will have the hardware needed to support all the AI features of iOS18. But what it means is not very clear. Does this just point to the AI on the device or all the AI additions that Apple is planning for iOS18?

In the former case, that means older devices (basically from iPhone XR to iPhone15), and you have to rely on cloud-based servers to provide AI capabilities. This is not ideal in terms of performance or privacy. But it is certainly better than the alternative that the phone, which is not more than iphone15Pro, has no AI capabilities. This makes iOS18 very less interesting for people with older devices and less inclined to upgrade in the fall.

Gurman's latest column is not encouraging in this regard. "AI processing requirements mean that users will need an iPhone15Pro or one of the models that will be launched this year," he wrote. "If you're using an iPad or Mac, you'll need a model with at least an M1 chip."

As I said before when I talked about the requirements for iOS 18AI, Apple usually finds it for yourself when you peruse the iOS preview material, I think Apple needs to be very clear on which phone which AI function will work, given the importance of this update.

AI is sucking up a lot of oxygen around the iOS18 update, so it's understandable even if you're wondering if there's any other kind of change on your phone. It's a fair question, especially if the AI compatibility issues we talked about above have proven to be more restrictive than our old iPhone owners would like.

Early iOS18 rumors covered an overhaul of the interface to iOS18. This means that iOS18 will no longer have a grid of app icons and widgets, allowing you to place things wherever you want. Speaking of app icons, you will be able to visually organize the app and change its color. (My wife has already done this on the iPhone XR, so she would be delighted if I could further tie the icon color to the app type.

The Control Center and settings are also on tap to get a redesign in iOS18, with the former adding new widgets and shortcut buttons. Gruman has shown that smart home users will especially benefit from the changes because there is a new interface for controlling connected devices. Rumored changes in settings should make it easier to search for the control you are looking for.

Apple occasionally brings new apps to the iPhone with major ios updates - think iOS16's Freeform collaboration tool — iOS18 seems no exception. Gurman reports that a dedicated password manager app will be part of this year's update, taking advantage of the existing iCloud keychain that manages passwords between devices.

For that reason, the Password Manager app is not exclusively for iPhone. It is set to launch on the Ipad and Mac as well as Vision Pro. I think the makers of the best password managers can say a lot about what Apple has obviously become muscular in their territory.

Apple's emphasis on AI will bring new summarizing tools to various apps, but we expect some of the apps built into the iPhone to refresh features that have nothing to do with artificial intelligence. Take notes app, which is supposed to not only get built-in voice memos but the ability to view math equations as well. In a related note, Gurman reports that the calculator app has been revamped and is finally arriving on the iPad as part of the iPadOS18 update.

An early look at potential upgrades to the iOS app suggested a close integration between the calendar and reminder apps (according to Gurman, both apps remain separate maps are being tipped to add custom routes to their feature set as well).
