5 Best Dramas of Prime Video to Stream Now

The drama is somewhere between a serious drama and a side-split comedy. If you want to get swept away without being overwhelmed by gut-busting humor or gut-wrenching tragedy, these movies are your go-to option. They provide a perfect blend of both genres without overdo it either. What makes Dramedy so fascinating is how it can mimic real life. Many of us experience episodes of laughter interwoven between devastating, upsetting, or generally distressing moments.

Prime Video has a trove of top-notch selections within this genre that are sure to send you on a roller coaster of emotions. Whether it's one with a familiar cast or one that has been nominated for numerous awards, you'll find the best dramas you don't want to miss.

Code Jefferson directed and wrote the script for his feature film debut, adapted from Percival Everett's novel "Erasure." It follows the life of Thelonious "Monk" Ellison (Jeffrey Wright). He is put on leave after discussions with his students about different views on racism. That's when he meets an author who has achieved incredible success from her novel. Frustrated, he decides to write a satirical novel using those metaphors — it ends up being very popular and highly acclaimed.

The film itself is a satire of its own, highlighting the stereotypical depiction of black life in American culture. But beyond that, it's also a family drama, completely parallel to each other.

In "The Holdovers," director Alexander Payne once again collaborates with Paul Giamatti, who previously worked in the film "Sides."Disgruntled history instructor Paul Hanham draws an uncomfortable assignment to stay late at a private boarding school for the holidays, to oversee students who do not come home for the holidays. Only one student, Angus (Dominic Sessa), is left. Campus Cook Mary (Da' Vine Joy Randolph) also participated.

The film won numerous awards. Among its cast, Randolph won the Best Supporting Actress award and Giamatti was nominated for Best Actor. It's a Christmas movie, but a lot of raw reality is drawn throughout, making it one-of-a-kind. The film has a richness of mind as the characters show compassion for each other while dealing with grief and disappointment in their lives.

If you're open to indie foreign movies, you'll want to check out this German comedy drama. It's the story of a supermarket worker stocking store shelves. Christian (Franz Rogowski) is a new employee in charge of the drink aisle. He reports to the disgruntled Bruno (Peter Kass) and shows him the rope. Meanwhile, Christian begins to fall on Marion (Sandra Huler), who is hoarding shelves of sweets. These workers bond with each other as they work the dark passages overnight, which makes up for the darkness they are trying to hide in each of their lives

While this may be more inclined to drama than comedy, there is some laughter and a touch of romance. But because romance is really about these characters hoping to get across the aisle, not the front and center parts of the movie.

In the movie, Marcus (Woody Harrelson), a minor League basketball coach, let his temper get his best. He ends up in front of a judge who gives him jail time and coaching choices for players with learning disabilities.

Thanks to Coach Marcus and his guidance, following the team and their improvement, it's definitely the story of the underdog.
