Prime Video's new No1 Movie has some of the strongest audience scores I've ever seen, but critics disagree

Critics and audiences are not always looking eye-to-eye In fact, in my experience, they often disagree It's certainly not unusual to see movies and shows arrive on 1 of the best streaming services and make a real splash in 1 group, but no other group is sure That's certainly the case with "Boys in the boat" now available on Amazon Prime Video

George Clooney directed this 2023 sports drama and landed on Prime Video earlier this week (Tuesday 5/28) It has already made some serious waves and no on the platform1 spot surpasses popular picks like "Blue Angels" and "Your Idea" to claim

Inspired by true events and based on a 2013 novel by Daniel James Brown, "The Boat Boy" chronicles the inspiring story of a University of Washington boat team competing with an elite opponent to win a gold medal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin

Set during the Great Depression and with political tensions boiling (the 1936 Olympics were fraught with controversy due to the rise of the Nazi Party in German), this underdog team of US rowers faced major challenges on and off the water But each team member rises to meet this adversity, trying to win a spot at the top of the podium

The film features a strong ensemble cast, but is led by Joel Edgerton as Al Ulbrickson, the team's steadfast coach, and Callum Turner plays joe Rantz Other cast members include Peter Guinness, Jack Mulhern, James Wolk and Hadley Robinson

"The Boys in The Boat" is currently on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 57% from professional critics But if you filter by "top critics" who leap up to 62%, the picture improves, which is more admirable, but the consensus of critics at RT, who included it in the film poster

, is that "The boys on the boat tell that touching true story with heart and solid craftsmanship, but the director George Clooney's Stolidly the traditional approach prevents it from leaving a lot of impact," critics have also labeled the biopic By the Number, which lacks a truly memorable moment The performance of the cast was at least appreciated

However, viewers have a different view of this period drama The film has a 97% viewership on Rotten Tomatoes This is especially noteworthy because the score comes from more than 2,500 verified ratings

When a film has an almost perfect audience score, the sample size is often very low, but in this case, the review audience backing up the high score seems to love this film a lot more than the critics

If you look at viewer reviews, words like "inspiring," "seductive," and "exciting" are common, with some declaring it a "must-see" Critics may not have warmed up to Clooney's latest directorial effort, but viewers have, and that's the most important thing

When it comes to judging "the boys in the boat," I have to confess that I'm leaning a bit against critics I found the biopic well built and well acted, but it was a bit too sleepy for me, and the tone and story caught my full attention

Nonetheless, don't let my lukewarm reaction to the film stop me from seeing you Between its strong audience score and the fact that it shot straight to the top of the prime video's most-watched list, it's clear that "Boys in the boat" is what pleases the real crowd And if you are looking for a movie that feels good, it is suitable for the whole family, it is an ideal choice
