Netflix will release a streaming report at the end of 2023 - and there are some big surprises

This week, Netflix dropped "What We Saw: The Netflix Engagement Report." A large spreadsheet showing the viewership of streamers from 2023-7 to 12 months, covering 99% of the viewership on Netflix. 

According to Netflix, in the second half of 2023, subscribers worldwide watched about 900 billion hours of content, down slightly from 930 billion hours in the first half.

The report contains a trove of data and views of nearly every TV show and movie on the service now, but here are some things that stood out to us:

We know that the live-action adaptation of "One Piece" was a blockbuster in 2023 when it was released. But now we know exactly how overwhelming that success is.Education" Season 4, viewing time recorded 3.74 million hours. 

The success of "One Piece" also helped to increase the viewership of the original animated series that influenced it, Netflix revealed that the viewership of the anime increased 2 times after the debut of the live-action series. 

Fans were shocked when the drama "Obliteration" was officially canceled earlier this year after making a strong debut at the end of 2023.The series quickly soared to the top of the TV streaming charts when it was released, spending a total of 10 weeks in Netflix's Top 6. 

With the release of this new report, this cancellation is even more confusing.The series recorded an impressive 18,400 million hours of viewing, enough to rank in the top 6 months of English programming the report covers, ahead of netflix original renewals such as "Love is Blind" and "Sweet Magnolias."20"

Netflix never revealed what factors would be included in the cancellation formula, but many assumed that the series did not get enough views to justify the cost of the action-heavy series. But as these impressive audience numbers became available, fans have been left wondering how many more hours would have been enough for the "obliterated" to not join the canceled show list.

"Squid Game" may have been an unexpected hit in 2021, but the Korean thriller about the Life and Death game show still captivated audiences in 2023, adding 6 billion hours to the total more than 20 billion hours watched on the platform during the 1,1,700 months that Netflix's viewership report covers. It was a great experience. 

Much of this ongoing interest may have been driven by the release of the real-life spin-off Squid Game: The Challenge, which was watched 270 million hours on the platform and ranked 10th for most of the time watched worldwide during the period. 

Taken together, the high interest in "Squid Game: The Challenge" and the continued audience growth of the flagship series Ming that viewers are still very excited about the Korean thriller.

According to the report, "Suits," originally broadcast in the U.S. from 2011 to 2019, attracted 9 billion hours of viewing over 1.5 seasons in the second half of 2023, making it the most viewed library title ever. 

Other library hits for streamers during the period included "Young Sheldon," "Grey's Anatomy," "Gossip Girl," and "Gilmore Girls," each of which had watched at least 100 million hours during the period.
