My favorite Apple TV Plus show is back this month - and better than Ted Lasso!

For several years, Apple TV Plus was often referred to as the "Ted Russo" streaming service because of the popularity of its sports-themed comedies. However, I always felt that label was a bit unfair, and to be honest, I don't think "Ted Russo" is the best sitcom on the platform.

Apple TV Plus offers some of the best prestige TV, including critically acclaimed hits like "Severance," "For All Mankind," and "Slow Horses," but my top pick has always been "Trying. It is an easy-to-watch sitcom about a British couple trying to navigate the messy world of adoption.

The show first aired in 2020, followed by a second and third season. After a nearly two-year long hiatus, "Trying" Season 4 will debut on May 22, and I can't wait to reunite with the show's beloved cast. My anticipation levels were already high, but the first trailer for the new season has just been released and, as expected, it looks perfect.

So if you're looking for something new to watch on your Apple TV Plus, or if you want a comfortable alternative now that Rathbone's full-time run has ended, "Trying" is the perfect choice. It's a more engaging and likable show than the soccer-based series that dominated the conversation about Apple TV Plus for so long.

"Trying" is a simple show, and that is arguably its greatest strength. It is not a thriller with a twist, nor an emotionally charged drama, but rather a feel-good comedy without any cynicism. It is the ideal comforting show, and I have rewatched the three seasons available to me many times. It's the kind of series you watch when you need a little pick-me-up after a long day.

"Trying" is about a young couple, Nicky Newman (Esther Smith) and Jason Ross (Rafe Spall), living in London, England. After struggling with a natural pregnancy, they decide to try adoption. This is the beginning of a series of ludicrous situations in which they attempt to navigate the complex process of proving to both the authorities and themselves that they are capable of raising a small human being.

The concept is simple, but what makes "Trying" so exciting is the wonderful chemistry between the two leads. Nikki and Jason are very likable characters, and their comic banter and sarcastic banter is the highlight of many episodes. Smith and Spall each bring their own unique take on things, the former with his physical comedy and the latter with his witty one-liners. They make a perfect pair, creating a believable (and easy to root for) couple.

Nicky's sister Karen (Sian Brook) and her quirky partner Scott (Darren Boyd), the couple's friends Freddy (Oliver Criss) and Erica (Ophelia Lovibond), Jason's parents Vic (Phil Davis) and Sandra (Paula Wilcox), and others, it would be unfair not to mention the wonderful supporting cast. All of these impressive characters come together to form one of my favorite casts of any comedy show.

Another core element of "Trying" is its willingness to get serious when appropriate. While most of the time it is heartwarming, the show has an emotional edge that incorporates more serious themes. This includes an excellent plot that looks at Nikki's lack of professional fulfillment and the overall sensitive handling of the difficult nature of the adoption process.

I've written about this Apple TV Plus show several times before, so I may be repeating myself, but I simply cannot not recommend it. If you've never watched it before, you can watch all three seasons; Trying is so spectacular that you'll probably watch the whole thing in a few days.

If, like me, you've been eagerly awaiting the return of "Try" on Apple TV Plus, you'll be pleased to know that the trailer for Season 4 was released last week. This short sneak peek gives us our first look at the return of Jason and Nikki, and promises to put a little new spin on the show's established formula.

The biggest change is that in "Trying" Season 4, viewers will catch up with the couple and their two adopted children, Princess (Scarlett Rayner) and Tyler (Cooper Turner), six years after Jason and Nikki were married and approved to become permanent adoptive parents The idea is to take advantage of time slips.

The previous season ended with the show's main cast in blissful happiness, but a lot can change in half a century. In this new season of "Trying," Nikki and Jason will face their toughest test of parenting skills yet as the Princess reveals her desire to connect with her birth mother. While "Trying" has never been a show that reveals unexpected or shocking revelations, we can't wait to see where this new yarn takes us, even if we're sure the ultimate destination will be a happy one.

"Trying" Season 4 will debut with a two-episode premiere on May 22 on Apple TV Plus and will then be available every Wednesday through July 3.
