13 New Movies and Shows to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Max and More (May 3-5)

May is already off to a very good start when it comes to streaming, thanks to new movies and shows available this weekend on Netflix, Max, and other top streaming services.

The weekend lineup boasts reruns of fan favorites such as the third season of "Hacks," "Welcome to Wrexham," and "Selling the OC" season 3. Also not to be missed are new series such as the spy thriller "The Veil" and the corporate drama "A Man in Full." Comedy is in full swing this weekend with a live John Mulaney special.

In movies, there is something for everyone, including the romantic comedy "The Idea of You" and the breakfast pastry origin story "Unfrosted." Here's what to see this weekend.

Deborah's (Jean Smart) successful stand-up special and "firing" Eva (Hannah Einbinder) have allowed the screenwriter to pursue other work. Thankfully, however, the "Hacks" team did not rest on its laurels and returned with even sharper and funnier new material. A year after their breakup, Deborah and Eva reunited at a comedy festival. Deborah was at the height of her career, and Eva was doing well as a TV writer. But a fascinating new opportunity brings them together again, and they rediscover the magic they create together.

Elisabeth Moss stars in this spy thriller from "Peaky Blinders" creator Steven Knight. Not unlike Moss' excellent "Top of the Lake," the film is on an international scale. Imogen Solter is tasked with rescuing a woman named Adira El Idrissi (Yumna Marwan) from a refugee camp on the Syrian-Turkish border and uncovering her secret. Is Adila her real name, or is she a high-ranking ISIS official plotting a new terrorist plot to rival 9/11? On a journey from Istanbul to London, the two women play a game of truth and lies with the highest and most dangerous stakes at stake.

This "Eat the Rich" limited series is based on the novel by Tom Wolfe, written by David E. Kelley, directed by Regina King and Thomas Schramme and starring Jeff Daniels, Diane Lane and Lucy Liu. Jeff Daniels, Diane Lane, and Lucy Liu. Daniels plays Charlie Croker, a former soccer star and Atlanta real estate magnate. Croker seeks help from his chief legal advisor Roger White (Amr Ameen), but Roger has other problems, including digging up dirt on his political enemies for the mayor (William Jackson Harper).

After 15 long and disappointing seasons in the National League, Wrexham AFC finally gained promotion back to the English Football League. But this is no time to bask in the glory. For the team, owners Rob McElhenny and Ryan Reynolds, and their dedicated supporters, the stakes are only getting higher. Nevertheless, an injury or setback could undo all the hard work that has been done. Meanwhile, the women's team, undefeated and promoted, has been dominant.

David Letterman's interview show is back with a single episode featuring John Mulaney. Letterman and Mulaney discuss a wide range of topics, including fatherhood, addiction, and standup comedy, while visiting Mulaney's Chicago high school. This is the first "My Next Guest" since December 2022, when Letterman sat down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The special precedes a six-episode live variety series by Mulaney (see below) scheduled to air on Netflix later this week.

The title of Mulaney's six-episode live-streaming variety series is no joke and features everyone in comedy (including Jerry Seinfeld's new Netflix movie, "Unfrosted," which is also on Netflix). Starting May 4 at the Hollywood Bowl and running nightly from May 6 through May 10, Mulaney is Seinfeld, David Letterman, Sarah Silverman, Nate Bargatze, Hannah Gadsby, and Patton Oswalt, Ronny Chieng, Tom Segura, Bill Hader, and other comedians, as well as special guests such as Flea, Beck, Weezer, and St. Vincent.

This Tudor-era whodunit adventure is based on the historical mystery novel by C. J. Sansom and is set in the 16th century reign of King Henry VIII. As monasteries are being dissolved in various places, lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) is ordered by Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) to investigate a murder at a priory in the remote town of Scarnsay. With Cromwell's own political survival in jeopardy, Shardlake and his colleague Jack Barrack (Anthony Boyle) must solve the murders and close the rectory.

Eugenio Derbez's bilingual, dual-timeline comedy returns with the further adventures of old Maximo (Derbez) and his younger self (Enrique Allison). In the present day, Maximo revisits a Las Colinas he no longer recognizes; in 1985, young Maximo continues to climb the ladder of success, but his rise threatens the relationships he has worked so hard to build. For both men, it is time to reconcile past mistakes and make exciting new beginnings.

There's plenty of sun, shade, and side-eye in this fresh installment of the real estate reality series. This "Selling Sunset" spinoff returns with more properties and drama for the agents of the Oppenheim Group. The budding romance between Alex Hall and Tyler Stanaland may explode before it begins. Sean Palmieri finds himself in a feud with his colleagues. And new agent Alexandra Harper also gets the heat, but not in a good way, as her sales skills are called into question.

Jerry Seinfeld's directorial debut, this comedy is loosely based on the true story behind the invention of Pop-Tarts, the famous toaster treat found in homes across America. 1963, Michigan, cereal rivals Kellogg's and Post compete fiercely to create a confection that will change breakfast forever. It is a tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen. The film stars Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, and Bill Burr, as well as comedy luminaries Hugh Grant and Peter Dinklage.

The romantic comedy is based on the novel of the same name by Robynne Lee. This time, Anne Hathaway's character is older and Nicholas Galitzine's love interest is younger. Solène is a 40-year-old single mother who goes to the Coachella Music Festival to chaperone her teenage daughter. There she runs into 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), lead singer of the hottest boy band on the planet. Sparks fly and the two begin a dazzling romance, but Hayes' fame becomes a challenge, and Solène learns how difficult life in the spotlight can be.

Isabella Merced stars as Aza, a 17-year-old with OCD, in this romantic drama based on the novel by John Green, author of "When You Wish Upon a Star." She balances her home life, friendships, and school life while confronting an endless chain of invasive thoughts over which she has no control. When Aza is reunited with her childhood friend Davis (Felix Mallard), she contemplates the possibilities of love and relationships, and her thoughts grow ever more intense.

A 4K restoration of one of the greatest concert films of all time was released in theaters last fall and is now available for streaming.Directed by Jonathan Demme in 1984, the film is based on Talking Heads' album " Speaking in Tongues, was filmed over four nights at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood during the tour. The concert begins with frontman David Byrne alone on stage and proceeds with the arrival of bassist Tina Weymouth, drummer Chris Frantz, keyboardist/guitarist Jerry Harrison, and other participants. The performance includes the band's early single "Psycho Killer" (1977) and their most recent hit at the time, "Burning Down the House" (1983).
