Like previous editions of the Regency-era period drama, the third season follows the brothers of the eponymous Bridgerton family as they overcome love and heartbreak in London Tong. Unlike previous seasons, however, this season will not follow the order of the "Bridgerton" novel series by author Julia Quinn, on which the Netflix series is based: instead of focusing on the romantic hero of book 3, Benedict Bridgerton, season 3 will start with book 4, That is, the "slow-burn" romance between Colin and Penelope, who have become best friends after years of friendship and unrequited love.

Newton clearly feels a kinship with fellow "Bridgerton" cast members such as Paige and Bailey, and the real-life connection was very beneficial in depicting the budding spark between Colin and Penelope. This is especially true in intimate scenes like the furniture-breaking.

"As soon as we met in season one, we hit it off right away," he told InStyle, adding: "She knew a lot more about other parts of the book than I did. She said, 'You know what, I'm Whistledown.'
