Apple recently announced its next big event, dubbed "Let Loose," and the May 7 show is expected to be dominated by new iPad models. However, Tim Cook took to social media platform X to tease a new accessory for the iPad, a new version of the Apple Pencil.

In the post, Apple's CEO wrote, "Pencil us in for May 7!" after a pencil emoji. There is also a video that begins with a hand holding a white stylus. It then switches between various artistic interpretations of the Apple logo on a display that appears to be an iPad. It ends with the stylus returning to a digital hand.

Between the word Pencil, the emoji, the stylus in the video, and the video introducing the digitally created Apple logo, Cook seems to suggest that something involving the Apple Pencil will appear at the May 7 event.

Given that the second-generation Apple Pencil was launched in 2018, it is definitely time for Apple to launch a new model in the form of the Apple Pencil 3. (A USB-C model was launched in 2023, but this was not a complete refresh.)

The Apple Pencil 2 has several intelligent upgrades from the original, including a matte design, more comfortable grip, double-tap gestures, and magnetic charging. The new Apple Pencil 2 is the first Apple Pencil to offer these and other features. Between these and the features offered by the original Apple Pencil, Apple seems to have covered most of the functionality one would want in a stylus. It will be interesting to see what Apple brings to the third generation Apple Pencil.

So far, we've heard rumors of "Find My" integration and a replaceable magnetic chip, and 9To5Mac reports that the latest Apple Pencil could add squeeze gestures to its suite of features.

While the latest iPad models will be the focus of attention at the Let Loose event, new iPad accessories are also expected to generate buzz. Based on the hype Cook is trying to generate on social media with his X post, it seems that he is expecting the same level of excitement for whatever Apple will be bringing to the next generation stylus on May 7.
