The romantic comedy earned the No. 1 spot on Netflix.

Romantic comedies are difficult to make well. However, among the crowd of boring rom-coms and humorless comedies, there is one film that stands out from the crowd. Currently sitting proudly atop Netflix, it deserves its place after receiving mixed reviews upon its theatrical release.

"Anyone but You" landed on Netflix two days ago (April 23) and has gained even more viewers on one of the best streaming platforms. Sidney Sweeney and Glen Powell actually held the top spot for quite some time, overtaking the disappointing action film "Rebel Moon - Part 2: Scar Giver" and the documentary "What Jennifer Did."

However, despite snatching the #1 spot on Netflix, the rom-com has not been a critical favorite since its release last December 2023. But if you're on the fence about whether or not to watch it, let me give you my honest opinion.

"Anyone but You" is a romantic comedy film about two enemies-turned-lovers, which is a classic romance trope, and it works very well. Bo (Sidney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) meet in a coffee shop and are immediately connected. But when Ben overhears him insulting her, she leaves and they meet again unexpectedly.

Beau's sister is getting married to a close friend of Ben's, and the two must attend the wedding in Sydney together. In order to make the wedding memorable for the couple, Bo and Ben decide to fake a relationship so that other members of the family will not be unhappy.

Becoming a fake couple seems easy at first, but the lies and deceit are quickly exposed.

Upon its theatrical release, Anyone but You received mixed reviews. Its current Rotten Tomatoes critic score is 55% from a 103 rating, but its audience score remains high at about 87%.

Drew Gillis of the AV Club says: No one wants or should want realism in a film like Anyone But You. The film is made as a fun escapade, and it succeeds." After all, movies are supposed to be funny.

Other critics agree that "Anyone but You" stands out among other comedies that have not done so well on the screen.

She praised the film for its "charm, wit, romance, enchantment, and, most importantly, the star chemistry that has been lacking in recent lackluster entries in the genre.

If that's not enough to convince you, GQ's Esther Zuckerman says: Sweeney and Powell, in this loose adaptation of Shakespeare's The Empty House, is one of the most engaging big-screen rom-coms in years.

Of course, not all professional critics agree, and some are quite scathing. John Nugent of Empire magazine says: "The obvious chemistry and charm of Sidney Sweeney and Glen Powell helps a lot, but not enough, in a romantic comedy that is severely lacking in both romance and comedy."

While divided reviews may put everyone off, Rotten Tomatoes scores don't always determine whether you like or dislike a film. I saw "Anyone but You" myself, and I can honestly say that Powell and Sweeney have an undeniable bond on screen. The teasing, tension, and slow romance make the film even better.

"Anyone but You" is worth streaming on Netflix, and the fact that it is currently #1 proves that others like the film. Before we get into the movie, remember that this is a romantic comedy, not a realistic or serious one. If you prefer something lighthearted and fun, this is the movie to watch next.
