Dyson's new AR app shows you where you missed vacuuming

[Worse yet, there is a good chance that the floor is not as clean as you think it is. And now Dyson wants to address this problem.

On Tuesday, April 9, vacuum cleaner and appliance manufacturer Dyson unveiled a new tool to make floor cleaning more effective with the help of augmented reality (AR).CleanTrace is an attachment for the Dyson Gen5Detect, which is an iPhone The iPhone can be set in the attachment. From there, users launch the Dyson app, turn on the CleanTrace feature, and it analyzes the floor and visually tells them where they have vacuumed and where they have not.

In a visual Dyson released on Tuesday, the user looks at the iPhone screen and sees a purple cover over the areas of the floor that were cleaned. In the areas that were not cleaned, the floor is still there. When that area is cleaned, the Dyson app covers that area in purple. This, combined with Gen5Detect's particle-sensing technology, would help suggest that the floor is indeed clean.

"With LiDAR technology in the user's phone, Dyson CleanTrace maps your room and uses AR to overlay the cleaning path, showing you where you've cleaned and what you missed," Dyson said in a statement.

"Existing technology in the Dyson Gen5Detect simultaneously acoustically senses and counts dust particles, proving the deep clean.

Vacuuming floors has always been an undesirable chore for many people. According to a Dyson survey, the majority of people tend to overestimate their cleaning time. In fact, the company's data shows that 80% of people say they vacuum for 24 minutes, yet their usual floor cleaning time is less than 10 minutes.

This disconnect creates a problem. Users who believe they have vacuumed for a long time think their floors are sparkling clean, when in fact they are not as clean as they had hoped.

Still, the Dyson CleanTrace is not for everyone. The device uses LiDAR technology, and the only smartphones that work with LiDAR are Apple devices, which means Android users are not eligible. Whether that will change over time, however, remains to be seen.

Dyson's CleanTrace will be available in June, and the software to pair it with Gen5Detect will be available as an update to the MyDyson app.
