Roku TV gets a major free upgrade - here are the top three features

Roku today announced the new Roku Pro Series TVs. At the same time, a free OS update is available for all Roku TVs, adding new features such as improved dynamic picture, improved content browsability, and Samsung The Frame-style Backdrops mode.

The latter is the most exciting attraction as it offers users a much wider range of personalization with artistic pictures and designs that replace the bland black screen of the TV when not in use.

The free update also adds the so-called Roku Smart Picture mode, which eliminates the need for users to fiddle with internal settings to get the best picture quality. Smart Picture dynamically adjusts uniformity, color, and backlight to keep entertainment crisp and clear regardless of picture mode or general on-screen content.

Roku updates will come standard on new Pro Series TVs, and older models and devices will have access in the coming months.

It is no surprise that Roku is the top-rated TV interface after Samsung's Tizen and is likely to grow further following its brand new updates Smart Picture and Backdrops will give Roku users improved picture quality and personalization, and Roku City is the "digital downtown" of interfaces.

Backdrops allows users to turn their TVs into art pieces of their choice. They can choose from a wide selection of free digital artwork, including museum pieces, abstract designs, and famous classics. Users can also digitally upload and set up their own images or family photos, bringing Roku TV to life like never before.

Roku Smart Picture is a feature that seems to streamline the setup process, providing the key to the best TV picture in a variety of applications and picture modes. This feature automatically recognizes the picture mode in use, such as vivid or standard, and optimizes backlight, brightness, and color to provide the cleanest experience.

If these additions are not enough, Roku is also adding cars to Roku City's digital downtown. According to Roku, this digital experience "reaches more than 40 million active accounts each month," and they are adding vehicles such as sports cars and ice cream trucks to make it even more effective.

Browsing for content that you know you will enjoy on the Roku interface will also be easier thanks to new IMDB ratings, TV show and movie trailers, and a handy save list that allows you to see updates on your favorite content. By adding TV shows and other content to the "Saves List" section, you will be notified of new seasons and episodes, as well as price drops for content available for purchase.

All of these updates will be available across the Roku ecosystem in the coming months, but Roku Smart Picture Max will only be available for new Roku Pro Series TVs, like the Roku Plus Series. In older models, the basic Smart Picture feature must be turned on in the settings, but this mode comes standard on new Roku TVs.
