Forget about the iPhone 16 - new leaks are a great reason to wait for the iPhone 17

The iPhone 16 lineup is still in the works and months away from launch, but a new leak suggests that if you don't plan to purchase a professional version of Apple's next device, it may be a good idea to wait until iPhone 17.

Apple plans to offer LTPO OLED displays on all four models starting with next year's iPhone 17, Elec reports, citing a person who claims to be familiar with Apple's plans LTPO OLED is the technical term for Apple's top-of-the-line iPhone displays, It offers 120Hz ProMotion performance and a 1Hz always-on display. It is currently available on Apple's iPhone Pro models, but not on lower-end iPhone models.

This would be a huge boon to iPhone buyers. The display on last year's iPhone 15 Pro performed exceptionally well compared to the 60 Hz display on the lower-end iPhone 15 models. And in a world where users are increasingly using their iPhone screens to watch videos and play video games, having a display with a faster refresh rate and overall better display is desirable.

However, if The Elec's report is accurate, it also sheds light on something we won't get this year: the 120Hz display on the iPhone 16.

Some rumors suggest that this year's iPhone 16 will be a somewhat minor update, with improvements under the hood, including a more powerful processor and advanced artificial intelligence features. However, those reports also suggest that the iPhone 16 will not necessarily involve a major redesign and that Apple is determined to keep the same display it offered in the iPhone 15 lineup.Elec's report seems to confirm these claims.

However, for those who do not want to spend a fortune on an iPhone Pro model, the question arises as to what they should do: buy this year's iPhone 16 even if it does not offer a less than ideal display, or choose to wait another year for the iPhone 17. However, if the screen is important to you, the latter may be your only option.

Of course, Apple has not talked about plans for next year's iPhone 17, much less what might be available in this year's iPhone 16. However, there is a mountain of evidence to suggest that the iPhone 17 lineup could be a remarkable one, with better displays, more powerful hardware, and design improvements, and for many consumers, choosing the iPhone 16 this year may be a bad idea.
