In April 2024, 7 New Films Earning 90% or More on Rotten Tomatoes Come to Prime Video

A new month means a new collection of Prime Video movies, and Amazon's streaming service will offer plenty more in April 2024.

Prime Video has added so many new movies this month that you may find it a bit confusing as to which ones are worth adding to your watch list. Below are some of the newest additions to Prime Video that have received scores of 90% or higher on the comprehensive review site Rotten Tomatoes.

The list even includes one of the best films of the past year, with arguably Paul Giamatti's career-best performance. If you're a Prime Video subscriber, these are the five films you should be watching this month.

By the time the credits rolled on "The Holdovers," my jaw started to hurt from laughing so hard. Films like this don't get made anymore, but they really should. Alexander Payne's holiday-themed comedy proves the enduring appeal of unashamedly heartfelt cinema. This funny and charming film will have you laughing one moment and tearing up the next.

In The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti gives the best performance of his career as Paul Hanham, a grumpy professor at an exclusive New England boarding school. Forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to care for students with nowhere else to go, the inflexible educator forms an unlikely bond with a burnout young man (Dominic Cessa) and a school cook (Davine Joy Randolph) who is grieving the death of his son. This odd trio are unlikely companions, but they develop a heartwarming bond over the course of the festivities.

"Chinatown" is a hard-boiled classic that blends crime mystery and character drama. Jack Nicholson plays Jake Gittes, a Los Angeles private detective who is hired by a woman (Faye Dunaway) who suspects her husband is having an affair. The job becomes complicated when Jake discovers that the husband is a high-ranking city official, and then things take a turn when another woman is revealed to be the husband's actual wife. And that is only the beginning of a twisted tale involving deception, betrayal, and murder.

Nominated for numerous Academy Awards upon its release and winning Best Screenplay, "Chinatown" is a groundbreaking American film that has stood the test of time. It succeeded thanks to the superb performances and chemistry between Nicholson and Dunaway, as well as a clever script and strong direction. Legendary critic Roger Ebert added it to his list of "great films."

I have absolutely no interest in professional wrestling. For that reason, the fact that "Family Fight" ranked as one of my favorite sports films of the past five years is a testament to the quality of this film. The biopic dramatizes the early career of Paige (real name Saraya Bevis), a professional wrestler from Norwich, England, who fulfilled her dreams of becoming a wrestling superstar, two-time WWE Divas champion and the first NXT women's champion.

Directed by Stephen Merchant, co-creator of the British version of The Office, the comedy stars Florence Pugh as Paige, Lena Headey and Nick Frost as her eccentric parents, and Vince Vaughn as her strict WWE coach. The process of Paige's rise from zero to hero is quite entertaining, but also quite predictable. However, the subplot focusing on her underachieving brother, Zach (Jack Lowden), is arguably even more interesting, as it explores an aspect of professional sports rarely featured in movies: failure.

Genre Sports Biographical Film Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93 Another gentle comedy-drama from director Alexander Payne, "Nebraska" is set in the prep school of "The Holdovers" and stars Bruce Dern and Will Forte as a father and son who travel from Montana to Nebraska in search of a million dollar bounty. While the general flow of the films is different, the richly emotional and likable characters are common to both films.

Presented in black and white, "Nebraska" is a very subdued film. There are no dramatic twists or earth-shattering stakes, but it succeeds in its simplicity thanks to two superb performances by Dern and Forte and an impressive supporting role by June Squibb. Bob Odenkirk also makes an appearance, stealing a few scenes. If you're looking for some peace and quiet at the movies this month, "Nebraska" is a must-see, and along with "The Holdovers," makes a great double feature.

Mia Farrow stars in this chilling horror classic as the eponymous Rosemary, who becomes pregnant after moving into a luxury New York apartment with her unsuccessful actor husband Guy (John Cassavetes). During the pregnancy, Rosemary's neighbors Roman (Sidney Blackmer) and Minnie (Ruth Gordon) take a strange interest, and the pregnant woman begins to feel isolated from her husband and suspects something sinister is afoot.

Leading up to one of the most memorable endings in film history, and with a spine-tingling score, "Rosemary's Baby" may seem a bit slow by modern horror standards, but it is a brilliantly unnerving film, carefully crafted to a terrifying conclusion The two horror films currently in theaters, Rosemary's Baby With two horror films currently in theaters, Immaculate and The First Omen, drawing no small amount of inspiration from Rosemary's chilling pregnancy, there is no better time to see this legendary horror film.

"Musica" is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age comedy by Rudy Mancuso. The film is Mancuso's feature film directorial debut; the internet musician also co-wrote the screenplay. Set in Newark, New Jersey, the film follows aspiring creators, a man and a woman, who suffer from synesthesia, a condition that causes sensory sensitivity, as they overcome the pressures of love, family, and Brazilian tradition. From the looks of the fun trailer, this could be a breakout hit on Prime Video.

In one of his earliest films and one of his few leading roles, Peter Dinklage plays Finbar McBride, a railroad enthusiast who moves to New Jersey after the death of his boss who left him a train depot there. Although Dinklage is often cast in supporting roles, this singular drama directed by Tom McCarthy showed that Dinklage can support a film with a full-fledged dramatic performance.

Contributing to the heartwarming story of The Station Agent are the superb performances of Bobby Cannavale as a local food vendor and Patricia Clarkson as his unhappy wife, whom McBride befriends as he sets down roots in a new place. McBride learns to take a more glass-half-full view of life as he steadily opens his mind to new experiences.
