Movies can definitely take you away, but there is something about a series that makes the experience far more enjoyable. The escapism lasts longer. You spend more time connecting with strange characters who don't exist in our world, and more time understanding the plot that unfolds with each season.

Here are some of the best sci-fi shows on Netflix not to miss. Whether you're swept away by the idea of time travel or want to pop off to another planet, these binge-worthy selections are sure to distract you from all that's going on in the world, at least for a little while.

For those who enjoy dystopian sci-fi shows, "3%" is a must-see. The series is set in a futuristic society where most people live in an impoverished area called Inland. However, hope is not entirely lost. Nevertheless, only 3% are actually able to complete a series of deadly and terrifying challenges in the "process. And the danger grows as the series progresses, as an underground group is introduced that aims to bring down the entire system.

The show is actually Netflix's first Portuguese-language original series. It has a much lower budget than other science fiction shows, but its rich storytelling and strong character development are overwhelming.

This black comedy meets science fiction in a way that feels oddly real. Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill) are two very different people who meet during a psychologically intense drug trial. When they realize that the trial is not quite what it seems, they are already on a path to explore multiple personalities and beings through a world of different hallucinations caused by a mysterious drug. - BV

In this version of the post apocalyptic future, the surviving humans find a way to send their consciousness into the past. Five travelers, known as the Travelers, randomly select people and access only their profiles stored on social media. Upon arriving in the past (the present day), they embark on a secret mission to save humanity from a terrible fate. However, they soon realize that their identities make things more complicated.

Brad Wright is the creator of the show and the man behind many popular science fiction shows, including Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. The show also features a familiar face: Eric McCormack, familiar from "Will & Grace," plays the team's leader, Grant McLaren.

When an alien crash-lands in a small Colorado town, he impersonates Dr. Harry Vanderspiegel (Alan Tudyk), a doctor. That way, he can come and go as he pleases while he searches for spaceship parts. When the town's real doctor dies, he is called upon to perform an autopsy instead. Despite his contact with humans, Dr. Vanderspiegel is on a mission to destroy their kind. Max Hawthorne, played by Judah Pullen, is the only one in town who can see him for what he is--an alien in disguise.

The show is a perfect blend of science fiction and comedy, making it an enjoyable series to watch all the way through. Tudyk brings a level of humor to the character that is not even present in the original comics, but is very appropriate for his role.

Set in a future where our consciousness has been preserved and digitized, "Altered Carbon" follows Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), an ex-soldier and prisoner who is freed by 300-year-old Lawrence Bancroft (James The film begins with his release by Purefoy. Kovacs' mission is to solve Bancroft's own murder. In Season 2, Kovas, played by Anthony Mackie, embodies his new self.

Many viewers have mixed feelings about Season 2, but it remains an award-winning show, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards. Based on the novel of the same name by Richard K. Morgan, the show is fairly faithful to the novel, albeit with some discrepancies. However, even fans of the book found that there was still much to enjoy in the small screen adaptation.

This German sci-fi thriller travels to a small town where two children have gone missing. The disappearances divide the lives of four families and reveal a mystery that spans four generations. The series revolves around these relationships, along with a mysterious cave, a nuclear power plant, and a sinister time travel conspiracy.

Time travel is an overrated science fiction theme, but the show more than delivers on its plot. The entire series lasts three seasons and will satisfy you; it is one of Netflix's most underrated gems, somewhat similar to Stranger Things. However, the show as a whole is a bit darker than that.

Charlie Brooker's creepy anthology series focuses on the disturbing nature of technology over six occasionally funny but provocative seasons. Each stand-alone episode explores a different aspect of a society obsessed with technology and social media, for better or worse, ranging from tragic love stories to bizarre tales that raise interesting questions about life, memory, and the concept of what happens after death. There are occasional glimmers of hope, but for the most part, this science fiction series ends up being unsettling. - BV
