Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, has released the first trailer for its feature film adaptation of John Green's best-selling novel Turtles All the Way Down. And reader reaction to this first look has been very positive.

Based on Green's 2017 book, Turtles All the Way Down is slated for release on May 2 at the Max. The teen film is directed by Hannah Marks, who is no stranger to direct-to-stream movies, having directed 2022's "Don't Make Me Go" for Prime Video. [Starring Isabella Merced as Aza Holmes, Cree plays Aza Holmes' best friend Daisy, and Felix Mallard plays her love interest Davis Pickett. The cast list includes Scrubs alumna Judy Reyes as Aza's protective mother.

The first trailer for the film plays its cards pretty close to the chest, giving away few plot details, but assuming that it is a faithful adaptation of the book, it is a story about Aza, a teenager with a severe anxiety disorder whose intrusive thoughts and crippling fears rule her life, her The film will follow her as she tries to navigate the roller coaster ride of adolescence without ruining her chances of happiness.

The novel also involves the search for a fugitive billionaire who goes missing after a criminal investigation, which will likely be a major part of the film adaptation. That is, of course, if the film's screenwriters, Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Uptaker, do not take a major turn and drastically alter the original story.

Initial reactions to this first trailer from book readers and John Green superfans seem to be particularly positive; while YouTube comments are not necessarily a completely accurate gauge of the community's overall impressions, this first teaser has evoked a lot of positive sentiment and and several commenters stated that the trailer alone brought tears to their eyes. John Green also commented through his "vlogbrothers" channel, expressing his excitement over the YouTube upload.

"Turtles All the Way Down" is not the first time Greene's work has been made into a film. His very popular "When You Wish Upon a Star" was released in theaters in 2014, followed by "Paper Towns" in 2015. The American author's debut novel, "Looking for Alaska," was made into a miniseries on Hulu in 2019.
