Google may soon launch "Find My Device" network - what is it and what are its features?

Google has been relatively silent since announcing its "Find My Device" network in 2023. However, the company has broken its silence and emailed the potential launch date of its device tracking service to some users.

The email, reported by 9To5Google and sent on April 1, declares that the Find My Device network will launch in three days. This means that it will begin on Sunday, April 7. Due to time zones, it is possible that the launch will take place on Monday, April 8. A Monday launch makes more sense than dropping new features over the weekend.

Here is what the email says about the "Find My Network" feature and when it is expected to be dropped:

Find My Device Network is Apple's Find My Device Network is AirTags pinned very similar to the way Apple's Find My Device network can be used to track other things that AirTags are pinned to, to help you locate your device. It works on devices that run Android, such as cell phones and tablets. Once the network is initiated, several earbuds and headphones are supported, along with trackers that can be attached to wallets, keys, and bicycles; the Fast Pair accessory works even when removed from the device.

Google also notes that users who do not wish to participate in the "Find My Device" network can opt out before the feature is launched on the web. If they are concerned about their device becoming part of the tracking network, they can avoid it, but they will also not be able to use the power of the huge Android user base to find theirs if it is misplaced or stolen. Interestingly, Google intends to turn on this network by default.

However, there are some oddities to this. First, it is odd that Google would send an email to some users with Android devices and not others; since the Find My Device network applies to all users, Google would want to send this email to all device owners. The email also contains a link to unsubscribe from the Find My Device network, but according to 9To5Google, this link is only valid for users who received the email and not for those who did not.

It is possible that Google sent the email by mistake, or that the feature is not actually ready to launch on April 7 or 8; we will have to wait until Google officially announces something, but for now, we can assume that Google is working on the "Find My Device" Check your email to see if they have sent you anything about the network launching soon.
