Top 5 New Shows Available This Week on Netflix, Prime Video, TV and More (April 8-14)

New programming will begin this week on streaming services such as Netflix and Prime Video, as well as on broadcast and cable television.

Leading the new programming lineup this week is the highly anticipated video game adaptation of "Fallout." It's time to leave the Vault and head to Wasteland. Also making their debut are the historical drama "Franklin," starring Robert Downey Jr. in a dual role, and the spy flick "The Sympathizer." The top new shows to watch this week include.

What is a prison without keys and guards? It's a radical idea that Arkansas Sheriff Eric Higgins tried for six weeks at the Polaski County Detention Facility. Higgins believed the program would improve living conditions in the jail and reduce incarceration rates. During the experiment, inmates were given greater autonomy. They could move around the facility as they pleased and decide how certain things should be run. Doing good deeds gave them more freedom. Some inmates took advantage of this opportunity to build their own lives, while others continued to challenge authority and each other; by the end of the six weeks, Higgins would find out if his ideas were sustainable.

"Westworld" creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy take on the most popular video game franchise of all time in this series adaptation. When a nuclear apocalypse strikes the Earth, survivors take refuge in a fallout storage facility called the Vault. 200+ years later, Lucy (Ella Purnell), an optimistic Vault dweller, leaves her peaceful abode to rescue her father. She must venture out into a radioactive wasteland that has turned into a hostile and savage place. Among the many dangers are other humans. Maximus (Aaron Morten) is a soldier in the Brotherhood of Steel, a militarist faction that seeks to bring law and order to Wasteland. And he is a morally ambiguous bounty hunter ghoul with a post-nuclear war history inside him.

Premieres Thursday, April 11 at 12 a.m. ET on Prime Video

Michael Douglas stars as Benjamin Franklin in this limited series based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Stacy Schiff, "A Great Based on "Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America." In 1776, Franklin, already world famous for his electrical experiments, embarks on a secret mission to France with American independence at stake. 70 years old and untrained in diplomacy, he must convince the monarchy to support America's desire to overthrow it in pursuit of democracy. Along the way, he must outwit British spies, French informants, and hostile colleagues to broker an alliance. Spoiler alert: Franklin succeeds.

Another week, another reboot no one asked for. Fifty years after the groundbreaking comedy by Norman Lear first aired, Netflix is offering a sequel to the animated feature. The voice cast includes J.B. Smoove, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jay Pharoah, and Marsai Martin. Lear himself contributed behind the scenes to the new show, making a cameo appearance in episode 8, his last role before passing away in December at age 101.

Robert Downey Jr. is taking on multiple roles in this satirical spy thriller based on Viet Thanh Nguyen's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, just after winning the Academy Award . A young man (Hoa Xuan De), called Captain, is a member of the South Vietnamese Army's North Vietnamese factory. Near the end of the war, he and his general are forced to flee to the United States. Living with other South Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles, he continues his espionage activities and sends reports back to the Viet Cong, but the Captain soon finds his loyalties wavering. Downey plays several different antagonists, often almost unrecognizable in makeup.
