Microsoft Surface Pro 10 - Meet Microsoft's first AI laptop

Microsoft's new Surface Pro 10 is one of the latest "AI laptops" to hit the market and promises to be the most powerful Surface Pro machine yet. Microsoft announced the business model today (along with the Surface Laptop 6), but this machine gives us a glimpse of the consumer model coming later this year.

The most notable thing about the Surface Pro 10 (priced at $1,199) is its Intel Core Ultra processor." The "Meteor Lake" chip has a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that facilitates AI-driven tasks, hence Microsoft's naming the new Surface device an "AI PC. Hence, Microsoft is calling the new Surface device an "AI PC." For this purpose, the Surface Pro 10 model has a Windows Copilot key on the keyboard for easy access to Microsoft's AI chatbot.

Another new feature is an "AI-enhanced" 1440p ultrawide webcam (up from 1080p) that supports Windows Studio Effects. These effects include automatic framing, eye contact, and background blurring. The camera has a 114-degree field of view, which Microsoft claims is the widest in Windows PC history; there is also a 10.5MP UHD rear-facing camera.

In terms of design, the Surface Pro 10 is identical to its predecessor. As before, the device measures 1.3 x 8.2 x 0.37 inches and weighs 1.94 pounds. It has an anodized aluminum body, a kickstand on the back, a magnetically attached keyboard, two Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports, a Surface Connect port, and a Surface Keyboard port.

This business model comes in two color options: platinum and black. If the consumer version we see in stores is the same as the Surface Pro 9, it will come in Platinum, Graphite, Sapphire, and Forest, with the latter three colors expected to be Wi-Fi models (assuming there is a 5G version as before). [The Surface Pro 10 has a 13-inch touch display with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,920 pixels, a 3:2 aspect ratio, and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. These are the same specs as the previous model, so you get a display that is adequate for work and video viewing. Brightness, color saturation, and color accuracy should also be on par with the Surface Pro 9, based on these specs.

According to Microsoft, the Surface Pro 10 has a battery life of 19 hours. If true, this device would last as long as or longer than some of the best MacBooks. To find out if Microsoft's battery life claims are true, one would need to take the Surface Pro 10 to a test lab.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 10 appears to be a modest update. The enhanced webcam should look better during calls, and if the AI features become more useful, the Meteor Lake chip may prove beneficial. Other than that, you get a device that is almost identical to what you got before.

Like its predecessors, this device may make our Best Windows Laptops list. But we'll find out if that's the case after we go hands-on with Microsoft's Surface Pro 10.
