As the New Year approaches, Netflix is offering its subscribers a collection of must-see movies. That includes the true story-inspired survival thriller "Society of the Snow," which is already set to be one of the first blockbusters of 2024.

"Society of the Snow" debuted on Netflix last week (Thursday, January 4) and is already one of the platform's most-watched films.

The latest film from Spanish director J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, Orphanage) is based on the tragic true story of the 1972 Andes flight accident in Uruguay. A plane chartered to take a Uruguayan rugby team to Chile crashes in the middle of the Andes Mountains, leaving the surviving team members stranded in the desolate tundra with no hope of rescue. Enduring freezing temperatures, intense hunger, and extreme loneliness, they fight to survive. And when food supplies dwindle, they are forced to consider the unthinkable in order to stay alive until they are discovered.

Danny Boyle ("28 Days Later," "Slumdog Millionaire") directed "127 Hours," about how canyoneer Aron Ralston survived after his arm was pinned under a rock in an isolated slot canyon in Blue John Canyon, Utah.

Based on Ralston's memoir Between a Rock and a Hard Place, the film shows how Ralston, played by James Franco, survives by using his love for his family as a driving force to break free and seek help. As a last resort, he makes a tourniquet out of an insulated tube from a water bottle and amputates his right arm to free himself.

"Touching the Void" is a documentary-style film that tells the terrifying story of two friends who attempted to summit the west face of the Silla Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. The survivors of the "snow party" who were lost in the same mountain range tell the story of how dangerous and unpredictable the conditions were.

Directed by Kevin Macdonald (State of Play, The Last King of Scotland), the film combines drama with interviews with two mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, about survival, resilience in the face of extreme adversity, and the human spirit in the face of extreme adversity. After a successful summit, their descent takes a turn when Simpson breaks his leg. Yates makes the painful decision to cut the rope that had been holding them together. Take a short break from real world inspired stories and turn your attention to a purely fictional survival story. Alfonso Cuarón's Academy Award-winning directorial debut, GRAVITY/Gravity, is among the most visually stunning science fiction films ever made. The special effects are so out-of-this-world detailed that you would think Sandra Bullock and George Clooney actually went into space to shoot this film.

In this thriller, Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a medical engineer on his first space mission who, along with veteran astronaut Lt. Matt Kowalski (Clooney), counts the days until retirement after this last expedition. All goes without a hitch, but during a routine spacewalk, disaster strikes and their shuttle is destroyed. Ryan and Matt lose contact with Earth, and survival is near impossible.

"Everest" is the true story of the 1996 Everest disaster. Two rival mountaineering company expeditions led by Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) and Scott Fisher (Jake Gyllenhaal) attempted to reach the summit, but faced setback after setback in an unforgiving landscape where any mistake could be fatal.

The crew faced brutal ice-covered weather conditions that resulted in the tragic deaths of eight people, including Hall, who helped popularize the commercial Everest ascent mission in the first place. Like "Society of the Snow," "Everest" uses cinematography that puts the viewer in the shoes of the frostbitten climbers, giving the viewer a front-row seat to the agonizing race for survival.
