7 Best Netflix Action Movies to Watch Now

Action movies are a great way to keep the dreaded January winter blues at bay. Intense car chases, exciting shootouts, impressive athleticism by the stars (and, let's be honest, their body doubles), dangerous scenarios, and exotic locales are the elements that make the genre so appealing. It's a veritable popcorn experience that will make you forget about the cold outside.

Fortunately, Netflix has countless action movies available for streaming. There are many classics that you've seen many times before, as well as many that you're seeing for the first time. We've identified some of the best options for you to stream. Grab a comfy chair, close the curtains, grab a warm drink, and Netflix action movies are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

If you're looking for a little comedy to go along with the action, we recommend "The Other Guys," starring the superb duo of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Allen Gamble, played by Ferrell, and Terry Hoyts, played by Wahlberg, are partners in the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Terry's disdain for Allen's reserved demeanor contrasts with his strong desire to be more involved in the action.

Unfortunately, the two have been overlooked as clumsy underachievers for years. They can only get out from behind their desks when they finally get a chance to shine by solving a case. Ferrell plays the mild-mannered accountant type with aplomb, and Wahlberg is phenomenal as the hot-headed cop. The comedy and over-the-top action scenes blend well together to create a thrilling and entertaining film from start to finish.

Nothing is more fun than watching Liam Neeson pull off his signature moves. The movie "Taken" is a classic that is worth rewatching over and over again, even if you've already seen it. Neeson stars as Brian Mills, a former CIA agent whose teenage daughter and best friend are kidnapped during a trip to Paris.

Brian learns that his daughter has been taken by an Albanian human trafficking ring, leaving him with little time before she is lost forever. This, of course, makes it all the more intense as he fights gun battles, high-speed car chases, and deadly characters to get the information he needs. While you may suspend your disbelief a bit in this film, that's definitely the joy of watching an action thriller.

Let's start at the beginning of the film that kicked off a major film franchise with 1993's "Jurassic Park." Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Michael Crichton's book, the original film told the story of how an eccentric businessman populated an island inhabited by extinct dinosaurs.

But as most fans of the film already know, many of the experts who arrive on the island to see the phenomenon face a life-threatening situation when a power outage releases the dinosaurs. Their only goal is to escape with their lives.

Ken isn't the only one here. Ryan Gosling plays Court Gentry, a prisoner who is given his freedom in exchange for joining the CIA as an assassin. Twenty years later, Gentry, now known as Sierra Six, is one of the few remaining members of the program. During one of his missions, he realizes that he has killed someone known as Sierra Four. This knowledge puts Six's life in danger, and now other assassins are after him.

Gosling is joined by an impressive supporting cast. Chris Evans plays the villainous Lloyd Hansen, Ana de Armas shines as CIA agent Dani Miranda, and Billy Bob Thornton stars as Donald Fitzroy, the CIA official who hired Gentry. While not James Bond, this is an exciting action film that could become a franchise.

In "Bullet Train," Brad Pitt plays a deadly assassin code-named "Ladybug." He boards a bullet train speeding through Tokyo, receives a mysterious briefcase, and gets off at the next stop. It's that simple. What Ladybug doesn't know is that he is not the only assassin pursuing this case. And what seems like a simple mission quickly devolves into an epic shootout as the train descends into chaos.

David Leitch, director of "Deadpool," brings the same irreverent tone to "Bullet Train," and the film is a good mix of clever action and tongue-in-cheek comedy. While Pitt is excellent in the lead role, special mention should be given to Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry as the British hitman duo who go by the code names "Lemon" and "Tangerine." The duo's humorous banter is extraordinary, considering how good "Bullet Train" is as a whole. - Rory Mellon

Over the past decade, the "John Wick" series has become one of the most consistently excellent action series in Hollywood history. By comparison, the first John Wick film is relatively old-fashioned, although the latest film pits the legendary hitman against an entire cartel. But the smaller scale does not make this action classic any less exhilarating. Rather, the more personal stakes feel fresh.

The film opens with Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, mourning the death of his wife. Her final gift to the former hit man is an adorable puppy, who becomes his salvation and best friend. But when the arrogant son of a mafia boss breaks into Wick's home, steals his prized Mustang car, and murders his beloved dog, Wick escapes the shackles of retirement and embarks on a ruthless revenge against those who wronged him. And once the boogeyman is unleashed, it is almost futile to quench his thirst for revenge. - Rory Mellon
