Top 7 New Movies Available This Week on Netflix, Hulu and More (Jan. 16-22)

With January in full swing, there are some great new movies coming out this week on Netflix, Hulu, and other major streaming services.

However, there is one streaming service you won't see on this list. That's because "The Marvels" will not be available on Disney's subscription streaming service, but on a pay-per-view video-on-demand streaming service. In a somewhat eyebrow-raising move, Disney had quietly made the last two Marvel movies available on PVOD streaming before Disney Plus. CEO Bob Iger appears to have made some changes behind the scenes regarding the streaming strategy.

In addition to the latest Marvel film, George Clooney's latest directorial effort, "The Boys in the Boat," will also be available. And "Damn Money," starring Paul Dano, is one of the few movies to hit Netflix this week.

Some of these titles are new digital releases and will be available for a premium price, but for others, all you need is the right streaming subscription. Without further ado, here are the top new movies available for streaming this week.

And while you're here, be sure to also check out the best new TV shows and new Netflix shows to watch from streamers this week.

Based on the true story of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team, "The Boys in the Boat" stars Callum Turner as Joe Lantz, one of the members of the University of Washington men's eight (eight in a boat) team. Led by coach Al Ulbrickson Sr. (Joel Edgerton), this inexperienced rowing team not only beats some of America's most storied programs, but goes on to compete in the 1936 Summer Olympics.

The critical consensus is that director George Clooney has made a well-made, inspiring sports film, though not a groundbreaking one. Audiences seem more than satisfied, as Rotten Tomatoes has an audience rating of an astounding 96% "fresh."

Another film that has divided critics and audiences alike, The Marvels is Disney's latest Marvel film and follows both the Captain Marvel film and the Ms. Marvel TV show Marvel. Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambo (previously seen in "Wanda Vision"), and Iman Velani as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, return as the three superheroes battle the next Kree threat.

"The Marvels" may not be the next great superhero movie, but it is a fun film that many will enjoy. And at 105 minutes, it is refreshingly short compared to the two-and-a-half to three-hour blockbusters that tend to dominate Hollywood. You would be forgiven for waiting for it to be distributed by Disney Plus, but the film is well worth a look.

"Next Goal Wins" is based on the true story of the world's worst soccer team. In the film, Michael Fassbender plays Thomas Rongen, a soccer club manager who becomes the head coach of American Samoa after being fired as the coach of the U.S. Men's National Team U-20. At the time, American Samoa was best known for its 31-0 defeat to Australia, the worst in international soccer history.

This Taika Waititi film is another example of divided opinion between critics and audiences. While the Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus has been scathing, calling it off the mark, audiences agree that while not groundbreaking, this comedy about a group of misfits led by Fassbender is a fun and heartwarming sports film.

Model. Activist. Pioneer. All three words are used to accurately describe Bethan Hardison, the first major black model in high fashion. In 1973, she became one of eleven black models hired for American designers in the "Battle of Versailles" fashion show, a landmark moment for the industry. Since then, Hardison has been an active black model activist whose work is considered vital to ensuring diversity in the field.

Originally, Hardison, fittingly, did not want Invisible Beauty to be about her; in an interview with CBC Radio, she said that she initially wanted to make a film about the fashion industry, but instead made it about her She said she was told over and over again that she should make the film about her instead. Ultimately, she realized that she needed to tell her own story in order to make a documentary that shared the message she wanted about black representation in fashion.

Starring Alma Peisti as Ansa and Jussi Vatanen as Holappa, two working-class Finns try to build a relationship against all odds. The entire film is in Finnish, but don't be put off. The film is one of 15 nominees for this year's Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Critics and audiences are sharply divided on the film, at least on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics almost without exception like the film, while audiences do not. Many still like the film, but many find it boring or fail to connect with it. Still, it is difficult to stream an Academy Award nominated film.

In this dystopian version of London, the city has eliminated all social housing. However, some residents refuse to leave their homes, forming a danger zone known as "The Kitchen." The film stars Kane Robinson as Izzy, one of The Kitchen's residents, and Jedediah Bannerman as Benji, who appears to be Izzy's son from the trailer. Early reviews of the first film by director Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya (yes, that Daniel Kaluuya) look promising.

Remember how GameStop and WallStreetBets subreddits dominated the conversation during the COVID-19 craze? Well, the creators of Dumb Money have done just that with their film, which is a film about the "Dumb Money" family, a group of young men who are trying to make a living by making a living. They're drawing on it.

In the film, directed by Craig Gillespie, Paul Dano plays Keith Gill, a YouTuber who starts a trend of buying GameStop stock. When people like Jenny (America Ferrera), Lili (Michala Herold), Harmony (Talia Ryder), and Marcos (Anthony Ramos) start buying stocks, the trend goes supernova and they all become millionaires. This causes hedge fund managers Steve Cohen (Vincent D'Onofrio), Gabe Plotkin (Seth Rogen), and Ken Griffin (Nick Offerman) to start hemorrhaging money and begin using their influence behind the scenes to stop the bleeding. Pete Davidson, Shailene Woodley, and Sebastian Stan also star, making this stellar ensemble cast worth watching regardless of the story.
