7 New Movies and Shows to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Hulu and More (Jan. 19-21)

Banish the winter blues with new shows and movies available this weekend on Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services.

The premium video-on-demand debut of the MCU's latest film, "The Marvels," featuring the star-studded trio of Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Verani, leads this weekend's viewing list.

On the TV side, look for mystery solving in "Death and Other Details," adventure in "Zorro," and romance in "Love on the Spectrum U.S." season 2. Here are some of this weekend's highlights.

Hercule Poirot and Benoit Blanc, this case is handled by Rufus Cotesworth. This murder mystery series follows the brilliant and dynamic Imogen Scott (Violet Bean). She unfortunately becomes the prime suspect in a mysterious murder on a luxuriously restored Mediterranean yacht. The possible culprits are all the pampered elite guests and exhausted crew members on board. To prove her innocence, Imogen teams up with master detective Rufus Cotesworth (played by Mandy Patinkin).

Another thriller miniseries begins this weekend. One fateful morning, Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) wakes up to the shocking discovery of a lifeless body in her home in the Irish town of Kilkinure. She has no idea of its identity or whether she is involved in what appears to be a murder. Lorna struggles with severe sleepwalking and traces her roots to a traumatic event in her youth: at the age of 15, she was forcibly removed from her home and confined to the notorious Magdalene convent of Kirkkinure. There she gave birth to a daughter, Agnes, but she was cruelly taken away and her fate remains a mystery.

Embark on a new interpretation of an iconic vigilante figure in this action-packed Spanish-language adventure series. 1834, California from old colonizers and Russian oligarchs, French aristocrats and the nascent United States, it has become a battleground for various factions. Caught in the crossfire were the constant victims: farmers, miners, Mexican laborers, immigrants, and indigenous peoples with deep roots in the land. In the midst of this chaos, Diego de la Vega (Miguel Bernardo), a young hero bent on revenge, is a beacon of hope.

Aquaman leaves the sea and crosses dry land. In this documentary series, Jason Momoa enters his natural "dirt bag" mode (a mode he describes as "someone who is in nature and always on the road") and travels across the United States in pursuit of art, adventure, and friendship through the lens of craftsmanship. He interviews and collaborates with artists and craftsmen for projects such as rebuilding historic motorcycles and racing on dirt tracks with North Carolina experts. [This moving documentary thoughtfully and compassionately delves into the romantic experiences of people on the autism spectrum. In Season 2, a mix of fresh and familiar faces, including Dani, Abby, Steve, and James, embark on a thrilling and challenging quest to find the perfect match. Their journey is one that everyone can relate to, and it is a story that will resonate with all.

The latest MCU film was unfairly criticized and as a result did not perform well at the box office. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, which is an action epic with a few sarcastic jokes thrown in, which is what an MCU film should be. This superhero saga blends the stories of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and the delightful Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel (Iman Velani). When a new Kree leader (Zawe Ashton) rips a new wormhole in space, the trio inadvertently trade places. They team up and must use their different light powers to fight the Kree and save various planets, including Earth.

The Game Stop Stock Riot of 2021 is the latest in the true financial crime/fraud/scandal genre. If you recall, the "short squeeze" originated on Reddit and successfully brought down a hedge fund. The fiction stars a regular guy named Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by putting his savings into stocks and posting them on a message board. His stock tip becomes a huge movement, and his postings begin to explode his life as well as the lives of many others. Frustrated with their losses, the billionaires begin to fight back, the government intervenes, and the market goes into chaos.
