The design of the first two generations of the Pixel Watch and Google's smartwatches have changed little. In fact, when the two are placed side by side, it is difficult to tell the difference unless one flips the first Pixel Watch over to see the fewer sensors on the back.

However, with the Pixel Watch 3, Google is reportedly making significant design changes and in the process addressing one of the main criticisms of the first two generations.

According to 9to5Google's sources, the company's previous wearables were 41 mm in diameter and 12.3 mm thick, but the Pixel Watch 3 will come in two different sizes when it arrives later this year.

The article does not say what size the two models will be, but it does suggest that the second version will be larger, which certainly makes sense from a market research perspective.

After all, the Apple Watch Series 9 (41mm and 45mm), Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 (40mm and 44mm), and Garmin Venu 3 (41mm and 45mm) all start out about the same size as the current Pixel Watch, but but offer larger versions for larger wrists.

While larger wearables provide more room for additional features, it is worth noting that most rivals in this space are simply increasing the screen and battery size to avoid confusion for buyers. 9to5Google reports that "Google has not yet announced any plans to differentiate features between the two sizes We don't know about any plans to differentiate between the two sizes yet."

But even without the extra upgrades, this is a significant improvement over the previous generation, removing one of the few negatives of our 4-star Pixel Watch 2 review.

Of course, the larger Pixel Watch 3 could cost more than the 41mm version. Garmin's Venu 3 is priced the same for both the 41mm "S" model and the 45mm version, but both Apple and Samsung have priced the larger screen $30 higher. If Google keeps the price the same, the 41mm Pixel Watch 3 will cost $349 and the larger one $379.

The Pixel Watch 3 is still early days, and this is the first real rumor about the wearable other than a patent that suggests Google may remove the buttons. If the wearable is to be released this year, it would debut alongside the Pixel 9 Pro.
