Top 11 New Movies Available This Week on Prime Video, Paramount Plus, Showtime and More (Jan. 23 - Jan. 29)

Several blockbuster new movies will be available this week on Hulu, Prime Video, Paramount Plus, and other major streaming services.

Curiously, Netflix is absent this week, leaving us to focus on new TV shows this week. However, other top streaming services are picking up the slack. Paramount Plus will offer "Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One" this week. With Paramount Plus and Showtime, you can also watch Nicole Holofcener's latest film, "You Hurt My Feelings," starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

It's also a big week for those who like to rent or buy streaming movies. Ferrari, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Wish are all coming to paid video-on-demand (PVOD) streaming services this week.

Some of these titles are available through new digital releases and can be purchased at premium prices, while others simply require the appropriate streaming subscription. And while you're here, be sure to check out the new TV shows to watch from streamers this week, as well as the best new Netflix shows.

Here are the top new movies streaming this week.

Starring Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, this sequel may be the last hurrah for the King of Atlantis. Even if critics had not criticized the film so harshly, it likely would not have been in the future plans of new DC Studios CEO James Gunn.

Nevertheless, audiences seem to like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The film is currently rated "fresh" by 81% of audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and fans of Momoa's Aquaman should not necessarily be put off by poor critical reviews. You can wait for the film to hit the max, but if you can't wait, now is your chance to see Aquaman and his brother Aum (Patrick Wilson) take on Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) from the comfort of your own home.

Directed by the acclaimed Michael Mann, the biopic about the legendary Italian sports car Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) was one of the most hotly anticipated films of last year. Focusing on the early struggles of the iconic Ferrari car company and the 1957 Mille Miglia race, the film is a marvel as Driver and Penelope Cruz, who plays Ferrari's estranged wife Laura, share the screen. It may be a while before "Ferrari" appears on subscription streaming services.

The kids need something to get them this week. Lucky for you, you have a few options. First, there's this one: Migration. Migration is the latest animated feature film from the studio that brought you Despicable Me and Minions. Kumail Nanjiani and Elizabeth Banks play Mack and Pam Mallard in the film, which follows a family of New England ducks who attempt to migrate south to Jamaica for the winter. Between the inevitable mayhem and a talented voice cast that includes Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, and Danny DeVito, it's a fun option for your next family movie night.

If you prefer Disney movies for your kids, there is another one this week. "Wish," starring Ariana DeBose as Asha, a 17-year-old girl who wishes upon a star to save the fictional kingdom of Rosas from impending doom. The star turns into an anthropomorphic ball of light and does not speak, but the voice cast, including Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, and Angelique Cabral, certainly do.

Critics may not like the film, but the kids definitely do.

Ask any moviegoer and they will tell you that the Criterion Channel is a great choice when it comes to streaming highly rated movies.

"Amanda," which premiered at the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals in 2022, may not have been a blockbuster, but this Italian-language film about Amanda (Benedetta Porcari), an upper-class 24-year-old looking for a lover, is definitely beloved. Critics and audiences alike have praised the film on Rotten Tomatoes, especially for Porcaroli's performance as the main character. Don't miss this absurdist comedy, available on streaming services.

This horror film about a haunted pool with more than just fears lurking in the deep dark has received mixed reviews. Critics and audiences alike have by no means universally praised the film, but I know several horror fans who loved this Blumhouse horror film. FYI, I also think the trailer does a poor job of selling the film, but that's just me.

Wyatt Russell and Kelly Condon play Ray and Eve Waller in "Night Swim," the story of their new family home and the backyard pool that springs from an underground spring. It's no "The Exorcist," but if you're looking for something scary to watch this week, "Night Swim" is a good excuse to spread some popcorn.

Tom Cruise dominated the box office in 2022 with "Top Gun": he was expected to do it again in 2023 with this latest installment in the "Mission: Impossible" series: Mission: Impossible. The latest in the series.

Then "Verbenheimer" happened.

But despite flat box office numbers, Mission: Impossible: Impossible: Fallout Part 1 was a big hit: Mission: Impossible: Impossible: Fallout Part 1 was not well received by critics. 2018's Mission: Mission: Impossible: Fallout. received near-universal praise from critics and showcased the great set pieces that fans have come to expect. If you missed Ethan Hunt & Co. this summer, catch them taking on "Entity" this week on Paramount Plus.

If "Migration" and "Wishes" are for kids, this movie is for adults only In "The Underdoggs," Snoop Dogg stars as Jacen "2Js" Jennings. A former soccer star, he crashes his sports car into a bus and is assigned to coach a youth soccer team in order to avoid community service.

With the two "g's" in the name, the Long Beach setting, and the reference to Martha Stewart, the film stops just short of hitting the fourth wall like 2J's speeding car. Still, from the trailer, it looks like it will be a fun comedy.

A24 and Max may partner in the future, but the film will arrive on Showtime's Paramount Plus as part of the studio's previous streaming deal. You Hurt My Feelings, in which Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Beth, a writer who discovers that her husband Don (Tobias Menzies) doesn't actually like her book, definitely focuses on brutal honesty. Thankfully, the film is not cruel to watch, thanks to a great script and a talented cast from top to bottom.

Available tomorrow (January 26) on Paramount Plus along with Showtime

Set on the island of Fuerteventura, "American Star" looks to be a dramatic and gripping thriller from the trailer. Starring Ian McShane as Wilson, an assassin waiting for his target on the island. The target's arrival is delayed, but instead of leaving, Wilson stays for a variety of reasons, including a woman named Gloria (Nora Arneseder) and the shipwreck of the American Star.

"Suitable Meat" is basically "Freaky Friday" meets H.P. Lovecraft. Is this combination to be expected? Probably not, but this adaptation of Lovecraft's "The Thing on the Doorstep" looks to be a horror hit. Heather Graham stars as Dr. Elizabeth Darby, a psychiatrist caught up in a nightmare in which her patient's (Judah Lewis) body is replaced. Night Swim may be the more prominent horror film streaming this week, but I dare you to pick "Suitable Flesh."
