Windows 12 may not appear in 2024, but a major update to Windows 11 is possible.

Windows 12 may not arrive this year. Instead, Windows 11 will reportedly receive a major update in September. Not surprisingly, the update is expected to bring a number of AI-driven features.

This is according to Zac Bowden of Windows Central, who has been the primary source of Windows 12 news for the past few years; according to Bowden, Windows 11 update 24H2 or "Hudson Valley." expected to be a fairly large OS update based on a new version of the Windows platform. Based on its reported scope, some believed that update 24H2 would be Windows 12, but apparently it is still Windows 11, which Bowden's sources say is due to the departure of former Windows head Panos Panay from Microsoft.

So what can we expect from the Hudson Valley Update? As we previously reported, the next Windows update will focus on the "next generation" AI experience. Given the company's enthusiasm for AI over the past year, this aspect is not surprising. This includes an evolved version of Copilot that enhances the Windows UX with AI and machine learning to better integrate all apps and programs on the OS.

Windows 11 24H2 will be released in September, but Bowden said Microsoft is currently testing some of the OS's features on the Insider Canary Channel, If you participate in the Canary Channel, you may have already seen some of the features that will be included in the next major Windows 11 update. Of course, not all Canary Channel features will be available to the public.

Even if Windows 12 does not arrive this year, getting a major overhaul of Windows 11 would be great for those using the best computers running this OS; the AI and machine learning aspects are expected, but snap layouts, File Explorer, Quick Settings, Phone Link, Energy Saver, and other updates are also likely. Update 24H2 is also expected to improve performance and security.

As is always the case with these kinds of stories, everything being discussed should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism, and we'll report back with any news on Windows 12 or Windows 11 24H2. Stay tuned!
