One of the advantages of smart locks is that they can be opened remotely from a smartphone or smart lock But what happens when you physically cannot do so and need help?

Kwikset today announced a partnership with FallCall Solutions, a company that will provide a new way to open and close smart locks

If the wearer is wearing an Apple Watch with the FallCall Detect or FallCall Lite app installed, the app will automatically contact emergency services when it detects that the wearer has fallen

If an ambulance is dispatched, the FallCall app sends a signal to the person's Kwikset smart lock to unlock the door

However, several gadgets are needed to make this happen For starters, you need an Apple Watch with drop detection (Apple Watch SE or Apple Watch Series 4 or later) and the Kwikset Halo smart lock (currently available on Amazon for $165)

You will also need to subscribe to FallCall's monitoring service The "Lite" service ranges from $1499 to $1999, while the full-featured service, which includes the ability to fine-tune fall detection and collision detection, costs $1799 to $2099

The Apple Watch's built-in fall detection feature can already call emergency services on your behalf and send messages to emergency contacts
