iPad Air 2024: Rumored release date, specs, design, etc.

Apple did not release an iPad in 2023, but is reportedly poised to revamp its entire tablet line in 2024. That revamp could include the iPad Air, which could receive a super-sized upgrade in the form of a 12.9-inch model. Not only that, but the thin and light tablet could also feature the M3 chip found in the entry-level MacBook Pro 14-inch.

There have been no official announcements about the iPad Air 2024 or the rest of the iPad line. However, it is unlikely that another year will pass without Apple releasing a new version of what is already considered the best tablet on the market. The question is, will the rumored iPad Air be a major step up from the excellent iPad Air 5? Here is what we have heard so far about Apple's iPad Air plans.

After Mark Garman's brilliant prediction of the M3 MacBook Air, we're pretty confident in his latest scoop that the M2 iPad Air is "likely to launch around the end of March or April."

As with the MacBook Air, we do not expect an Apple event to be held to announce these devices. Therefore, Tom's Guide will be watching the Cupertino staff closely!

As we previously reported, analyst Minqi Kuo believes that the iPad Air 2024 will be the first to offer two different sizes.

Neither iPad Air model is expected to feature an OLED display, but according to Kuo, the LCD panel could use an Oxide backplane with "the same specifications as the existing mini LED iPad Pro's."

The new iPad Air 2024 models are reportedly codenamed "J507" and "JF37," and the rumored new 12.9-inch model appears to be the only major addition/redesign to the series. Neither lightweight tablet seems likely to significantly shake up the aesthetics of the existing Air series, which we think is a good thing. Of course, don't be surprised if the refreshed larger tablet is naturally heavier, but given that this is still an "Air" tablet, we doubt it will be as heavy as the iPad Pro.

We haven't heard much about possible color options. The current iPad Air comes in five different shades: space gray, blue, pink, purple, and starlight. It is possible that the successor tablet will feature the same color options, but more colors would be nice.

The new iPad Air will reportedly receive a significant spec upgrade. Apple updated the current Air with an M1 chip, but no successor with an M2 chip was seen. Rumors suggest that Apple will skip the M2 iPad Air and release an M3-powered slate. If true, the new iPad Air will be the fastest model in the series.

The entry-level M3 MacBook Pro will offer superior performance, bringing a significant increase in speed and new graphics capabilities such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading. The possibility of playing graphically demanding games like Resident Evil Village and Baldur's Gate 3 on such a thin device would be very impressive.

Of course, the question arises as to whether a tablet needs that much power. Some argue that the same M-series chips that power the best MacBooks seem like overkill. Nevertheless, tablets like the iPad Pro M2 allow video editors to work remotely. As a gamer, you don't want to compromise the experience just because it's a tablet. Therefore, an iPad with the M chip could be perfect for some.

Apple has not said anything about the iPad Air or other iPads rumored to be coming in 2024. Therefore, everything explained above should be taken with a grain of salt. We wouldn't bet on it just yet, but we wouldn't be at all surprised to see an entirely new iPad in 2024, including an iPad Air.

We will update this page as the latest rumors and reports come in, so stay tuned!
