Early season racing begins to heat up with the first of Spain's stage races, the 75th Volta A La Comunitat Valenciana. While there are no huge mountains, the five very hilly stages set in and around the city of Valencia are a race for climbers, not sprinters.

All are rugged, but stage 4 is the toughest. The 175km from Teulada Moreira to Val Debot has an uphill finish that will determine the course of the race.

The favorites to win the overall are the duo of Matej Mohoric and Pero Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), the twin attacks of Alexander Vlasov, Jai Hindley (BORA-Hansgrohe) and Brandon McNulty UAE (Team Emirates).

Stage 4 is a mountainous stage north of Kalp, a famous winter training camp. The leading riders had marked this stage for the overall win, and although a breakaway was allowed, it was not given much space.

Unfortunately, due to a spectator fatality, the end of this stage was shortened and the final climb was cut from the race, with a new finish on the final climb about 14 km before the end. This change was communicated to the teams with 24km to go, forcing a change in plans and strategy.

The breakaway group was caught entering the final 6km of a tough climb and all hell broke loose. Leader Alessandro Tonelli had to ride for his life to stay in the yellow jersey, but unfortunately he was unable to do so, and the victory and the new race lead went to American Brandon McNulty.

The final stage was a very short 93 km from Betela to central Valencia.
