Apple Acknowledges "Ghost Touch" Issue Plaguing New Watch Models - Still Not Fixed

Cupertino is reportedly investigating a "ghost touch" bug in the latest Apple Watch models, the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. In this bug, a tap or swipe is registered by the device even though it is not touching the display.

This false touch issue could cause the screen of affected Apple Watch models to "jump erratically," unintentionally start a phone call, or prevent the device's passcode from being entered. The disturbing nature of the issue has led some users to report concerns that their devices may be hacked.

According to an internal memo shared with Apple authorized service providers obtained by MacRumors, Apple is "aware" of the issue and is currently "investigating. The memo further states that Apple authorized service providers have been instructed to refrain from offering replacement watches for this issue.

"Some customers may be reporting false touches on the Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2 displays," the memo states, noting that older versions of the smartwatch do not appear to be affected. However, since some user reports of this issue date back to 2020, it is not at all clear how widespread this problem actually is.

Nevertheless, a recent Reddit thread with multiple user responses clearly mentions current Apple Watch models. In other words, if you are experiencing these issues with your new Apple Watch, you are definitely not alone.

It is unclear what is causing the issue or when Apple will roll out a permanent fix (or if a software update will fix it), but Apple notes that by forcibly restarting the affected watch and bringing its software up to date, The problem may be alleviated to some degree, according to the memo.

Reddit users and MacRumors commenters under the article also state that a reboot or hard reset may also solve the problem, even if it is only a temporary fix. However, we will keep you posted if there is an official update from Apple.
