Apple Vision Pro may take 4 generations to reach "ideal state" - but could replace iPad

There is no denying that the Apple Vision Pro headset is an impressive device, but it is far from perfect. It has many problems as well as a price tag. These problems should be resolved with each next generation, but unfortunately it may take four generations for the Vision headset to reach its "ideal form."

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman argues that Apple's Vision team feels there is still much work to be done. The ultimate goal is to refine the headset to the point that customers will want to use it every day.

While it is not entirely clear what this "ideal shape" would look like, some of the initial complaints about the Vision Pro will provide valuable feedback to Apple's designers and engineers. In our review of the Apple Vision Pro, our biggest concern was the tethered battery and how cumbersome it can be.

There are no doubt plans to include an internal battery pack in future headsets, and while the Vision Pro weighs only 21.9 to 22.9 ounces, users report that its weight is felt more clearly after extended use. Sadly, that may be a fact of using a mixed reality headset at the moment.

Garman believes that Apple is positioning the Vision Pro as a future iPad replacement. Much like Apple's attempt to market the iPad as a productivity-oriented alternative to the MacBook, which met with limited success, Gurman notes that Apple's tablets have "lost their original purpose and become a more obscure part of Apple's product portfolio."

I do.

I agree. My own iPad is typically used as a secondary streaming device or for quick access to home security camera footage. Occasionally I use it as an e-reader or digital notepad, but not that often.

Garman believes that the Apple Vision Pro and its successors will need a lot to compete with the iPad. That means new hardware and software upgrades, plus better support from app developers and content creators. Until that happens, Vision Pro is "basically a prototype," Garman said. Nevertheless, it is something that can be tried out for as little as $35,000.

It's unclear how long it will take for a fourth-generation Apple Vision product to appear, especially considering how long we've waited for the Vision Pro. So if you're not ready to try it out yet, you may be waiting a long time.
