Top 11 New Movies Available This Week on Netflix, Hulu, Max and More (Feb. 13-19)

There are some great new films on Netflix, Hulu, Max, and other major streaming services this week.

But let's be clear - this week is all about "Oppenheimer," the 2024 Oscar contender that is a frontrunner for multiple awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and multiple acting categories. In all, the film has been nominated for 13 awards. There is no doubt that this biopic is the top streaming movie of the week.

But there are other films worth noting. A24's story of the tragedy of the Von Erik Proles family is coming to paid video-on-demand this week and is definitely worth a look. So is the 2023 film adaptation of The Color Purple, which will be available on Max this Friday (February 16).

Some of these titles are new digital releases and can be purchased at a premium, but for others, all you need is the right streaming subscription. And while you're here, don't forget to check out the best of the new TV shows and new Netflix shows to watch from streamers this week.

Here are the top new movies streaming this week.

I just watched this film starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, and Stanley Simons as the Von Erich brothers of a wrestling family. The first half of the movie is a bit slow and a bit unorganized. However, the wrestling scenes are incredibly well done, from the tension to the choreography. And as the film enters the second half, this real-life drama hits you in the gut over and over again. This is not a movie to watch for a good time, but for a good movie.

It's not often that a film that's only 31 minutes long makes the top list of new films, but this short film by Pedro Almodóvar couldn't be left off the list this week. Starring Ethan Hawke as Sheriff Jake and Pedro Pascal, this Western about two lovers caught up in a murder investigation is not to be missed. At only 31 minutes, there is no way not to find the time to watch it.

New York sports reporter Mack (Gina Rodriguez) used to go out with friends after work and have pick-up "flings" of varying degrees. One day, however, Mac meets correspondent Nick (Tom Ellis) and decides that maybe he doesn't just want to hang out.

The film also stars Damon Wayans, Jr., Liza Cossie, Augustus Prew, and Joel Courtney as Mac's friends. There even seems to be the usual pattern of the protagonist realizing that maybe the attractive guy he fell for was not the right one to begin with. Still, if you need a date movie, this may be the perfect setting.

Available on Netflix.

"Next Goal Wins" may be more fun than good, but according to Rotten Tomatoes, audiences seem to like it, even if critics don't. Michael Fassbender stars as director Thomas Rongen in this comedy about the worst team in the world, the American Samoan soccer team. At the time the film was set, American Samoa was the team most famous for suffering the worst loss in international soccer history, a 31-0 defeat to Australia.

Again, the film is not groundbreaking or an Oscar contender. But this comedy about a group of misfits led by Fassbender is a fun, heartwarming sports movie, and sometimes that's all you need.

After watching the trailer for "Kill Room," it's hard to decide whether the film is funny, absurdly funny, or just plain absurd. Starring Uma Thurman as the rough-and-tumble art dealer Patrice, the dark comedy centers on a hitman-turned-art world sensation (Joe Manganiello), but overacting in the trailer suggests that the story will eventually go off the rails The trailer shows overacting that suggests the story will eventually go off the rails.

With this cast, however, you may not mind if we digress a bit. In addition to Thurman and Manganiello, the film features Maya Hawke, Debi Mazar, Larry Pine, and Samuel L. Jackson, an impressive call sheet for a film that didn't even make a million dollars.

"Oppenheimer" has been dominating the industry and movie theater screens ever since it sparked the phenomenon of the verbenheimer. The film won five Golden Globes this year and is currently nominated for 13 Academy Awards. It has also been a commercial success, nearly surpassing the $1 billion mark at the box office.

Starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, this Christopher Nolan biopic is less about the weapon itself and more about the man behind the most horrific weapon in history. That does not mean that the film skimps on the Manhattan Project, and the Trinity Experiment is one of the most famous scenes in film history. But more than that, the film delves into Oppenheimer's life. Murphy, as well as Robert Downey Jr.'s performance as Lewis Strauss, is one of the best of the year.

Available on Peacock beginning February 16.

Alice Walker's The Color Purple hit bookstores in 1982. Since then, it has become one of the most influential American fiction books, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1983 and spawning several film adaptations, including a 1985 movie directed by Steven Spielberg and a 2005 musical.

This 2023 film adaptation also continues that proud lineage, albeit with only Danielle Brooks as Sophia nominated for an Academy Award: set in Georgia in the early 1900s, this portrait of Celie Harris (Fantasia Barrino) and her family black coming-of-age musical is one of the best movies of 2023, despite the Academy's rejection.

"Miller's Girl" stars Jenna Ortega as Cairo Sweet, an 18-year-old girl living alone in her family's Tennessee mansion. In order to find a compelling college admissions essay, she attempts to seduce her high school English teacher Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman) at the urging of her best friend Winnie (Gideon Adlon). Miller is a failed writer and Kylo uses his ego to get close to him.

Ortega and Freeman star in what is arguably one of the biggest films streaming this week. But fair warning, this is advertised as a dramatic comedy, but from the trailer, there is nothing interesting about the film, and it seems more like a psychological thriller.

Pod Generation, starring Emilia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor, screams dystopian nightmare, complete with walking treadmill desks and publicly available suctionable oxygen tanks. Clark and Ejiofor are the archetypal couple in this sci-fi rom-com set in a near-future New York City. And that means that when they want a child, they go through a uterine center that uses an artificial uterus shaped like a pod (or egg, as Ejoffor puts it) to establish the pregnancy.

Issue. Ejoffor does not like this idea, preferring natural births and a child connected to the real world around him rather than the artificial world in which they exist. If you are looking for something different from the typical rom-com, yet still very accessible, "The Pod Generation" may be worth watching this week.

Available on Hulu starting February 16

"Dis is Me . Now:" starring Jennifer Lopez, "This is Me . Now" is Jennifer Lopez's first studio album in over a decade. My first impression from the trailer is that it looks like a romance movie, "Wonka" or "Alice in Wonderland". "

I'm not sure if this "narrative-driven cinematic original" is for me, but fans of Lopez's music won't want to miss it. It is clearly one of the best new films available on Prime this month.
