WATCH: Marvel's "X-MEN 97" Trailer for March 20 Release on Disney Plus

Marvel has released the long-awaited trailer for "X-MEN '97," a revival of the 90s classic "X-MEN: The Animated Series" for the modern era. The film will premiere on Disney Plus on March 20.

"X-MEN '97" begins where the previous film, which ran for five seasons, ended in 1997. The trailer also features some of the circumstances of that fateful finale, called "Graduation Day," which saw the death of Professor X, known as Charles Xavier.

This time, the events appear to bring the mutant X-Men team back together under Magneto's leadership. Cyclops solemnly states, "We must remain vigilant, the Professor has entrusted us with his dream," in a trailer highlighting anti-mutant protests, battles with sentinel robots, and the unceremonious corpse of Professor X. Magneto hands over Professor X's will to the mutant group, explaining his new role as head of the school and owner of Charles' mansion.

Marvel's new animated series appears to be faithful to the original show not merely in animation style, but also in casting, with George Buza's Beast, Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Allison Seely Smith's Storm, Wolverine and recalls many of the same voice actors, including Cal Dodd as Wolverine. New cast members include Ray Chase (Cyclops), Matthew Watterson (Magneto), AJ Locascio (Gambit), and Adrian Huff (Nightcrawler).

The new Disney Plus series will be helmed by writer Bo DeMayo and directed by Chase Conley, Emi Yonemura, and Jake Kostrena over 10 episodes. A second season is already in development and was announced at last year's San Diego Comic-Con.

The original "X-Men: The Animated Series," which first aired in 1992, proved to be one of Marvel's most beloved projects; the 76-episode animated show brought Marvel Comics to the forefront of pop culture It pushed it to the forefront and ignited a new generation of superheroes and comic book fans long before the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe took center stage.

With this new series, created by Disney's $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox, Marvel is finally getting the most out of its X-Men characters, and fans seem pretty excited about their return to animation. The trailer release comes on the heels of the official casting for Marvel's "Fantastic Four" project, which is scheduled to debut on July 25.

If there was ever a time to join Disney Plus and experience the animated magic of X-Men mutants struggling to keep the world safe, it is definitely now.
