Forget the Apple Watch - OnePlus Watch 2 has 100 hours of battery life

OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus Watch 2 is indeed coming, with a launch event scheduled for next week at MWC 2024 in Barcelona. But if that's not enough, OnePlus promised that the new watch could have an insane 100-hour battery life (for a smartwatch).

OnePlus claims that this battery life is in "full smart mode." No one is entirely sure what that means, but it may be some sort of ultra-extreme battery-saving feature that makes the Watch 2's longevity sound better, but at the expense of functionality.

This decision appears to have been made with feedback from the OnePlus community and is intended to improve the overall user experience. As such, there is a three-year gap between this watch and the original OnePlus Watch.

This gap also gave OnePlus time to work on durability and design. While specifics are still scarce, OnePlus says the Watch 2 will be made of stainless steel and will feature a sapphire crystal watch face to protect the watch no matter what happens throughout the day. While it doesn't seem to be a "rugged" smartwatch by any means, it will be interesting to see how it ultimately compares to rivals like the Apple Watch Ultra 2.

OnePlus also says that the watch will follow a "similar flagship design language" to the OnePlus 12 series. The company therefore wants all OnePlus 12 or OnePlus 12R owners to pair their new phone with the brand new watch.

The Watch 2 itself is a very ordinary round smartwatch with two buttons on the right hand corner. The top button looks a little like a crown, and the bottom button is a very normal oval button. This design variation suggests that these buttons could be used for different purposes, but for now we cannot say what they are.

Finally, OnePlus says that the OnePlus Watch 2 is the start of its goal to move away from the "flagship killer" label and become an "ecosystem builder." In the company's own words, the goal is to provide users with "an experience that is not only improved, but transformed." It appears to offer more than the bare minimum and iterative upgrades.

If battery life is truly 100 hours, or just over 4 days, at least some of the major players in the smartwatch industry will be forced to improve their own battery life.

The OnePlus Watch 2 will be officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress on February 26 and will be available in two colors: Black Steel and Radiant Steel. In a week, we should know more about what features the OnePlus Watch 2 will offer. Until then, stay tuned to the OnePlus Watch 2 hub for the latest news and rumors.
