Google Pixel Watch 2 Adds Ingenious Feature to Vibrate to Tell Time

When it comes to telling time, there is only so much that can be done. That is why standard watch dials have lasted so long. But Google may be developing a new way for the Pixel Watch 2 to tell time with a series of vibrations.

A Reddit user discovered a new "Vibrate Watch" feature in the Pixel Watch 2's vibration menu, which allows users to tap the clock face with two fingers to see the time. A single tap displays the "hour," and a double tap displays the "minutes."

It is a rather clever idea, but the minute hand vibrating could quickly become complicated if Google is not careful. Therefore, the feature seems to display the time in two different ways - "digits" and "characters."

In Digits mode, a long oscillation represents 10 ticks, while a short oscillation means 1. Google also plans to offer five different vibration speeds, from Very Slow to Very Fast, for a bit of customization. This is a very interesting idea that takes into account the fact that using a smartwatch screen to tell time may not always be appropriate. Illuminated screens are very noticeable in the dark and can be annoying to others.

It doesn't matter if you are in a movie theater, struggling to sleep next to your partner who is a light sleeper, or stuck at your mother-in-law's boring birthday party where glancing at your watch would be rude or awkward. Vibration takes light and glances out of the equation, meaning the watch tells only you what it's doing.

Reddit users have noted that while the feature appears to be available, it has yet to actually work. So even if this feature were available in the Pixel Watch 2's settings, one would have to look at the menu and dream of the day when the smartwatch would tell the time with an elaborate buzzing sound.

It is unclear when this feature will be enabled, but we will likely see it in the March 2024 Pixel Feature Drop. So expect to hear more about this in the next week or so.
