OnePlus Watch 2 is likely to use Google's Wear OS

The first OnePlus Watch, launched in 2021, was somewhat lackluster and widely criticized for the extreme limitations of its very basic proprietary real-time operating system (RTOS).

The OnePlus Watch 2 will be unveiled within days at MWC 2024 in Barcelona, and the company has already teased 100 hours of battery life; it is not yet clear if OnePlus will keep the RTOS, but when it launches next week it hinted that it may switch to Google's Wear OS.

This hint comes as OnePlus' sister company Oppo announced on X that the next Watch X will launch on February 29.

You may have noticed that the hardware looks almost identical to early press images of the OnePlus Watch 2, right down to the angular side buttons: compare the Oppo Find N3 with the OnePlus Open, or the OnePlus 8 Pro with the Oppo Find X2 Pro.

However, the OnePlus 8 Pro looks very similar to the Oppo Find X2 Pro.

More important in Oppo's tweet, however, is the small "Wear OS by Google" logo below the tagline. A footnote below the image adds that Android 8.0 or later is required.

If Oppo is using Wear OS, it seems almost certain that OnePlus is using it as well. Technically, it is possible that the OnePlus Watch 2 will diverge from Oppo and continue to use its own RTOS, but given what we know about the relationship between the two companies, this seems unlikely.

Besides, the FCC listing reveals that the OnePlus Watch 2 will have a 500mAh battery, which will likely provide much longer than 100 hours in RTOS. After all, the original OnePlus Watch could be used for 14 days (336 hours) on a single charge and only had a 402mAh cell.

To be clear, 100 hours, or a little over four days, on Wear OS would be an impressive achievement; even the TicWatch 5 Pro, with its massive 628mAh battery, only promises 80 hours, so it will be interesting to see what OnePlus will sacrifice to achieve the 100-hour goal. It won't take long to find out; the OnePlus Watch 2 will be officially unveiled on Monday, February 26, not to mention we'll be here with all the details and analysis you want on that day.
