Taking its most obvious cues from Armando Iannucci's 2017 film, "The Death of Stalin," Tracy's six-episode miniseries is packed with the hallmarks of a tyrannical, anti-democratic regime in crisis: a narcissistic leader with hypochondria, an every-thing A flirtatious sycophant, a Rasputin-like figure (Corporal Herbert Zubak, played by Matthias Schoenaerts).

The film depicts a year in which Prime Minister Varnum makes the Grand Hotel, where he has been commandeered, his headquarters and prison, increasingly insane, but the world events surrounding this fictional Central European nation are uncomfortably close to what is happening in real life today. This is when the black comedy stops and the satire becomes more urgent. Don't miss it.
