Galaxy Watch 7 may look quite different from other Samsung smartwatches

Whether it's Samsung's first smartwatch or the more recent Galaxy Watch 6, when you think of the Galaxy Watch, you think of a circular screen. After all, it is the design that Samsung has offered since the beginning. However, things may change when the rumored Galaxy Watch 7 arrives later this year.

Sammobile reports that Samsung is strongly considering changing the design of the Galaxy Watch to a square display, ditching the circular appearance. While there is still time for Samsung to decide whether to change the design of the Galaxy Watch, Sammobile quoted a person familiar with the company's plans as saying, "The idea is being studied intensely internally."

The square Galaxy Watch 7 would be a blast from the past for Samsung wearables. Samsung launched the first Galaxy Gear watch in 2013 with a square 1.6-inch display. The company offered a similar design in the Galaxy Gear 2 and Galaxy Gear Live; the Galaxy Watch, introduced in 2018, introduced a circular look to Samsung's watches.

One of the best smartwatches, the Apple Watch, of course, features a square design, but other smartwatch makers are also trying to differentiate themselves from Apple's offerings. One of the easiest ways to do so is to offer a circular design. And since Google's smartwatch operating system, Wear OS, works very well with circular screens, the look makes sense.

From Sammobile's report, it is unclear why Samsung would consider such a big move after years of offering a circular design; Sammobile's sources are also unsure whether Samsung will opt to offer a new look for the Galaxy Watch this year or next year could not be certain whether it would make that move.

Samsung has time to make a decision, but may not have time to make such a major change before production begins. We expect the launch to take place at the Galaxy Unpacked launch later this year - normally it would happen in August, but rumors suggest that Samsung may be eyeing an earlier launch window to avoid the Olympics this summer.

Samsung has been tight-lipped about its plans for the Galaxy Watch 7, and rumors surrounding it are surprisingly few. Earlier this year, there were reports claiming that Samsung was upgrading the watch's processor to an Exynos 5535, which should make it more energy efficient.
