Getting into Warhammer - the first 6 sets to buy

Getting started with any of Games Workshop's products can be expensive and often confusing. With the wide variety of kits, paint selections, and blister packs, it can be difficult to know where to start and what to look for. But we've put together a quick list for those looking to start a great new hobby.

While the Warhammer property encompasses several different games, most people start with two main games. Warhammer 40K is set in the distant future, where the Imperium of Man fights for its existence against alien hordes and chaotic possession. Age of Sigmar, on the other hand, is a fantasy version that focuses on spells against a squadron of devastating armored warriors.

Warhammer 40K is a great starting point for anyone looking to get started. There doesn't seem to be much in the kit, but it is designed to introduce the game and teach basic rules at a relatively affordable price.

The kit includes 16 push-fit models that require no glue to assemble, including five Infernus Space Marines armed with flamethrowers, ten Thermagants, and one Ripper Swarm. Such small numbers are ideal for those who get confused by the abundance of rules in the game, starting with the simple ones and building on them.

The kit also includes clippers, dice, and measuring sticks. Finally, it also includes a 30" x 22.4" gaming mat for playing, paints with paintbrushes, and a handbook with rules and paint tutorials and an overview of several missions to play.

The 40k Starter Set provides a more complete army than previous kits and includes HQs and several squads for both Space Marine and Tyranid. It provides a better playing experience for two players, but does not include tools or paint.

The starter set includes a 64-page starter set handbook with all the building guides, rules tutorials, and training missions new players will need to learn the game with a friend.

The kit includes 38 push-fit models and reference sheets for their statuses and abilities. The Space Marines include one captain in terminator armor, five heavily armed veteran terminators, and five Infernus Marines. The Tyranids, on the other hand, include a Winged Tyranid Prime, a monstrous Psycho Phage, three Von Ryan Reapers, 20 Terminants, and two Ripper Swarms.

There are enough models to get started, and the box includes a 30" x 22.4" paper gaming mat, 10 dice, and two range rulers. Aside from the paint, the kit contains everything needed to play the game, as well as learn the basics of two popular 40K corps.

For those who want to get more into the hobby side of the game, this kit is a great way to learn how to paint simple models. The kit includes paints to color the Ultramarine chapter of Space Marine.

Included in the kit are the following paints: Corax White, Macragge Blue, Balthasar Gold, Abaddon Black, Agrax Earthshade, and Armageddon Dust. along with the paints, three plastic push fitted Infernus Marine and one paintbrush.

This kit is an ideal starting point for beginners and is one of the easier models to practice painting, as the Marines lack fine detail and flat armor.

This kit is the perfect starter kit for anyone wanting to try out Age of Sigmar and contains just enough models for a short game. It doesn't offer a lot of variety, but it's enough to decide if you want to do more.

The box set includes an 80-page Warrior Edition book filled with lore, tutorial battle plans using the models in the kit, and a straightforward rules breakdown. There is also a 56-page core rule book, which provides new players with the basics of the main rule book and is ideal for furthering knowledge of the game.

The box contains 18 push-fit models, enough to form two squads, Stormcast Eternals and Cruel Boys, and leaders for both. Stormcast has five Vindicators and a Knight Arcanum, a powerful mage who can use a variety of spells; Kruelboyz, though a small elite, has 12 warriors armed with shields and a Killaboss with its own stab grottos.

There is also a selection of cards and loyalty abilities to make gameplay quick and straightforward, and the game can be played on a single 30" x 22.4" game mat. Finally, there are 10 dice and two range finders that are essential to actually playing the game.

The Harbinger set offers more models than the Warrior set, enough to make two large armies that offer deeper gameplay and allow for longer, more strategic games.

This kit includes the same 80-page book as the preceding kit, but the tutorial battle plans in this book cover a larger group of models. There is also the same 56-page core rulebook, giving you everything you need to know to actually play the game.

The big difference, however, is the number of models, with more troops and more heroes for new players to master in this title. For example, Stormcast Eternals comes with a Lord Imperatant armed with a powerful hammer and a faithful griffhound. He is accompanied by three Pretor Bodyguards and five Vindicators. The Kruelboys also add to their numbers with a kit that includes 10 Swamp Caller shamans with pot-groats, 10 Gutrippers, and 10 Hobgroat Slitters.

As with the preceding kit, there are also warscroll cards for all units for easy examination. Finally, there is a 30" x 22.4" paper gaming mat, 10 dice, two range rulers, and reference sheets for all rules.

For those who want to get more into the hobby side of the game, this is a great kit for learning how to paint simple models. This kit includes paints for coloring the stormcasts.

The paints included in the kit are: Corax White, Leadbelcher, Kantor Blue, Retributer Armor, Stirland Mud, and Agrax Earthshade. Along with the paints, two push-fit stormcasts and a paintbrush. The kit is an ideal starting point for beginners because the stormcast models are easy to handle and do not contain a large amount of fine detail that can plague new painters.

Both Warhammer and Age of Sigmar are expensive hobbies to enter, and Games Workshop designed these kits to give new players the best chance. There are plenty of other kits worth looking into, but as it stands, these are the best kits for beginners.
