The PlayStation version of Backbone One finally comes to Android

Android users can finally get their hands on the PlayStation-branded Backbone One mobile gaming controller. After launching exclusively for iOS last year, Backbone announced an Android-compatible version on Tuesday, available now for $99.

The Backbone One - PlayStation Edition essentially turns your phone into an instant Nintendo Switch. Functionally, it is not much different from the Razer Kishi V2 or the standard Backbone One controller. Simply connect your phone to the charging port and access PS5 and PS4 games from the PS Remote Play app. No DualShock 4 or DualSense controller is needed. All you need is an internet connection and a PS5 or PS4 console. It looks and feels almost identical to a standard console controller, making it a great accessory for cloud gaming.

Although the controller is PlayStation-branded, it is not only compatible with the PlayStation library; titles from Google Play, the Apple App Store, and game streaming services like Xbox Game Pass can also be played.

Like the iOS version, the mobile controller's design is a cross between the Backbone One and Sony's DualSense controller. It has Sony's iconic cross, circle, square, and triangle face buttons, and the black and white color scheme matches the look of the PS5.

However, this version is for Android phones, so you can connect your phone via the USB-C connector instead of the Lightning jack. It can also connect a Sony PlayStation Pulse 3D wireless headset via the headphone jack.

Also announced on Tuesday was an update to the PS Remote Play app, which now supports controller-based navigation in landscape orientation; with the Backbone app, it can be set up as a hub to access all games that can be played with the controller. Also available is PlayStation-themed customization. [The Backbone One - PlayStation Edition for Android can be ordered in the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. According to Backbone, it will also be available in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore in the near future.
