The new Mac Studio may be launched at WWDC2023

A new 15-inch MacBook Air and Apple's first mixed reality headset are likely to be unveiled at WWDC, but there may be more surprises in store for desktop fans

In a tweet yesterday, Bloomberg's well-connected tech reporter Mark Garman wrote that Apple will accept trade-ins of three recent Macs starting June 5 'You read that right,' Garman tweeted 'I'm expecting new Macs at WWDC'

Garman had previously predicted that the Mac Studio would be refreshed, despite speculation that it was merely a temporary solution until Apple finalized a new Mac Pro

However, when Garman last made that prediction, he declined to give a release date, speculating that the M3 chip would not be revealed at WWDC, as it is expected to come later

Now, to be clear, Gurman is not explicitly saying that Mac Studio will be revamped at WWDC The tipster merely stated that followers could read intent into the trade-in change if they so desired

It is also quite possible that Apple just wants to give consumers the option to trade in more hardware for the rumored $3,000 headset

However, if the simplest explanation is correct and Apple is allowing trade-ins for new models coming out, there is an obvious way to upgrade the Mac Studio without the M3

Current models use the M1 Max or M1 Ultra chip, and while the M2 Ultra has not yet been introduced, the M2 Max does exist and is found in the top-of-the-line 2023 MacBook Pro 10 billion more transistors than the M1 Max, and a CPU core has two (10 to 12) and six (38) additional CPU cores

To be sure, it still falls short of the M1 Ultra (20-core CPU and 64-core GPU), and the benchmarks show it However, it is an attractive option for those considering an entry-level model, and Apple could surprise us with the M2 Ultra

We'll find out soon enough; WWDC 2023 kicks off in a week, on Monday, June 5 It's going to be very interesting
