The Google Pixel Watch is getting the upgrade that some users have been waiting for since the smartwatch's launch: fall detection will be available on the Pixel Watch starting February 28, a measure that could save lives if a user falls hard. Introduced.

Fall detection is a staple of many great smartwatches, including the Apple Watch Series 9 (although the Apple Watch has had this feature since 2018). By utilizing readings from the built-in motion sensor, fall detection can recognize when a user has suffered a severe fall and connect them to emergency services if necessary.

According to Google, the Pixel Watch's fall detection feature is triggered after 30 seconds of no motion following a severe fall. After that 30 seconds, the watch will sound an alarm, vibrate, and prompt the user to choose whether or not they are okay.

If you are safe, the alarm will go off; if not, you can request a call to emergency services. If the user cannot tap the smartwatch but needs help, emergency services are automatically called after one minute.

Regarding the accuracy of the feature, Google said that the Pixel Watch's fall detection tool was "extensively tested" to determine the difference between intentional fall-like movements (think burpees) and actual falls. Even a slight stumble should not trigger this feature.

We frequently see headlines about Apple Watch users who have been saved or helped by the fall detection feature, and as someone who recommends smartwatches for a living, I am glad that Pixel Watch users can benefit from the same peace of mind.

The Pixel Watch's drop detection feature can be enabled in the Personal Safety app, and some users may see a promotional card for the new feature on the "Updates" page of the Watch Companion app.
