QD-OLED TVs, a new panel technology that combines the advantages of OLED TVs with those of QLED TVs, may still be in its infancy, but it is about to take a giant leap forward.

According to FlatPanelsHD (opens in new tab), citing The Elec of Korea, Samsung Display has received machinery that will enable it to manufacture 8K QD-OLED panels.

The machine, nicknamed "Jarvis," is a G8.5 inkjet solution for mass production of QD-OLED displays, according to manufacturer Kateeva. These displays will eventually be used in 8K TVs and high-resolution monitors. [In fact, Samsung Display has yet to officially announce its production plans for 8K QD-OLED TVs. So how do we know if we will get 8K QD-OLED TVs? We are not buying a $14.5 billion machine to make it look good in a factory.

As you've probably noticed, there isn't much native 8K content available these days; the only way to really see 8K content is to download it onto a USB stick and plug it into the back of your 8K TV.

However, there will come a time when that will change. As TVs get larger and less expensive, they will need higher resolution to preserve image detail. Also, more colorful, higher contrast televisions will be required.

The solution? 8K QD-OLEDs.

It is difficult to predict how soon QD-OLEDs will be available and, more importantly, how much they will cost. The only two QD-OLED TVs available today, the Samsung S95B OLED and the Sony A95K OLED, are not cheap, but their 65-inch versions are not much more expensive than traditional OLED TVs. If future 8K models are as well, they may be perfectly affordable and ready for the living room in a few years.
