PSN is down — PS5 and PS4 online services continue to struggle

PSN continues to be plagued by connectivity issues that have been affecting online gaming services for the past four days.

The official PlayStation Network status page reports that "some services are experiencing issues," highlighting "games and social" features as the primary areas most affected.

"Games, apps, and network features may have difficulty launching," Sony claims, while at the same time promising that it is "working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."

The affected platforms are listed as PS5, PS4, PS3, and PS Vita, essentially all PlayStation devices that can connect to the Internet. This tells us that this is more of a problem on Sony's part than a hardware issue.

According to Sony, the problem first surfaced on Friday (February 26), but gamers had taken to social media at least 24 hours earlier to complain of PSN problems.

Not all aspects of the PSN are experiencing problems; the PlayStation Store appears to be operating normally, as do additional PlayStation services: PlayStation Now, PlayStation Music, and PlayStation Video."

Judging from the most recent tests, the service seems to be intermittent rather than completely unavailable; we were able to connect to games of "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" and "Fall Guys" without any problems, but "Rocket League" matches I had trouble getting into the "Rocket League" games without long waits.

The past few days have not been conducive to playing consoles online; Xbox also experienced online connectivity issues last week, preventing users from playing games online or accessing the Xbox store.

Unfortunately, in this scenario, the problem is on Sony's side and they will have to wait for the issue to be resolved. Hopefully the problem is mostly resolved at this point, as some games and services appear to be functioning normally as of Monday (March 1).
