PS5 and Xbox Series X gamers are well aware that there is no shortage of SSD capacity. Despite having 825GB and 1TB drives, respectively, they quickly fill up when playing the latest high-capacity games.

But Crucial now has the answer. The new 4TB X6 external SSD is fully compatible with the new Sony and Microsoft game consoles, but at $489.95, it is essentially the same price as the console itself.

Still, you get an excellent external SSD drive at this price.

The 4TB capacity is enough to keep most gamers busy for years without needing to delete anything, and it comes with USB-C for easy connection to the PS5 (assuming you can actually afford it). With an adapter, it can also connect to older consoles like the Xbox Series X and Series S, or even the PS4 and Xbox One.

It's also surprisingly compact, slips easily into a pocket, and weighs less than 40 grams. [At up to 800 MB/s, it's faster than many good external hard drives, though not as fast as the PS5's own SSD; drop resistance up to 6.5 feet is an added bonus.

With the caveat that you cannot run PS5 games or Xbox Series X games directly from an external SSD. However, PS4 and Xbox One games can be run from an external SSD or HDD, so there is no need to give up valuable internal storage for backward compatible titles.

You can also use an external SSD to store PS5 and Xbox Series X games, so you can use Crucial's X6 as cold storage for games you don't play that often but don't want to re-download.

Of course, the 4TB model is not only suitable for console gamers. Compatible with any USB-C device, photo- and video-obsessives will also enjoy its large capacity and small footprint, if not the big price tag.

Fortunately, Crucial has also released a smaller, budget-friendly option in the form of a 500GB version. This costs only $69.95, but read speeds drop to 540 MB/sec.

The series also includes the existing 1TB and 2TB models for $129.95 and $189.95, respectively.
