Google plans to support augmented reality (AR) on more dual-camera phones, starting with the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, and as discovered by Android Police, the company is using an app for the ARCore feature set, Google Play Services for AR, which is the app used for the ARCore feature set, has issued an update
The changelog states "dual camera stereo depth on supported devices," and Google's list of supported devices clearly states that the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will be the first dual camera phones to receive this update in the coming weeks
It is a bit odd that the first devices to receive this update will be the 2019 flagship Pixel phones However, both use telephoto lenses on their secondary cameras, which will likely help create more detailed 3D maps
Both the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 are clearly missing from the upcoming announcement Both use ultra-wide secondary shooters, so Google may be doing additional work in the background to get ARCore to function properly on these devices
