A new update for the Xbox Series X was released this week, bringing a number of changes, including HDR and FPS switching and support for the upcoming Xbox wireless headset, but most importantly, a serious controller issue has been fixed.

As this extensive thread on Microsoft's forums attests, some players have experienced controller disconnects on a regular basis since the console's launch. However, this latest system update directly addresses the issue and seems to have gotten to the root of the problem.

Xbox's Jason Ronald confirmed on Twitter that the update has been released.

Microsoft had previously acknowledged the issue and promised in a statement to The Verge that it would be fixed "in a future update." So it's nice to see that the company has followed through on those words and actually addressed the issue. [However, this disconnection issue is not the only glitch users are experiencing with the Xbox Series X controller. There have been widespread reports of button presses not registering with the controller, causing input to drop out during play. Microsoft has again acknowledged the problem and announced that a fix will be released.

Of course, the Xbox Series X is not the only console plagued by controller problems. The Nintendo Switch joystick is notorious for joystick drift, to the point that Nintendo is facing multiple lawsuits over the issue; the PS5's DualSense controller has also reported stick drift issues.

The days when you could buy one controller and have it work for a decade are long gone. Perhaps this is symptomatic of the fact that gamepad technology is so advanced these days.

At least in this case, Microsoft is addressing the issue in a reasonably timely manner; hopefully, for Xbox players, frequent controller disconnections will no longer be a problem.
