This PS5 accessory turns the console into a DVR - but there is a catch

Back in the day, the PS3 had an add-on called "Nasune" that functioned as both a TV tuner and a DVR. That Nasne is coming back with the PS5. In other words, the cable box cannot be replaced on the PS5.

This is according to Engadget Japan, a 2TB DVR is coming. However, this time it is manufactured by a different company.

The original PS3 DVR was called Torne and first appeared in 2010. Two years later, the Nasne appeared with a number of upgrades, including an internal hard drive and streaming media support; the Nasne was also compatible with PS4 for a while, but was discontinued in 2019. But now it has been resurrected and is in the hands of Buffalo.

The design doesn't seem to have changed much from the past and still resembles a PS3 miniature. Nevertheless, the storage has been enhanced, with a built-in 2 TB hard drive and support for up to 6 TB of external storage. In other words, there is plenty of space to store your favorite movies and shows.

The new Nasne also functions as a network storage device. Stored TV and video can be viewed with the torne application. It must be connected to the same network. In other words, it doesn't necessarily have to be connected to the PlayStation console, which is a big help these days when it's hard to find a place to buy a PS5 console.

The new Nasne box will be available at the end of March, priced at 29,800 yen (about $273). Of course, it will only be available in Japan, and we do not know if it will be available in the US

. Sony has confirmed that the torne app will be available on its latest game consoles, but its release is scheduled for the end of this year; it should still be playable on older consoles, such as the PS4 and smart devices that run the torne app.

I must say that it is a bit ironic that news of the new Nasne arrives a week after Microsoft announced that it would shut down all TV features on the Xbox One.
